100 Books Like Anthrax Island

I really enjoy books where the central character is someone who is unused to solving crimes. In this case, the heroine, Thora, is a lawyer hired to investigate a project on the northeast coast of Greenland.

I loved the remoteness of the setting and how its very isolation puts the investigating team in a difficult position. I found the strange folklore and beliefs of the local inhabitants fascinating, especially the tales of creatures known as Tupilaqs, which add an uncanny layer to the story.

What I love about this book is that the central character is an ordinary guy who is thrown into a horrifying situation. Discovering someone has poisoned him, Jaakko’s only chance of surviving is to find the culprit.

I loved the peculiarity of his business and his reaction to the threat from a rival company. I like the way the mystery unfolds, with some truly unexpected scenes–particularly those involving a sauna and a Samurai sword.

The author’s black humor and his use of language (even in translation) are delightful, and I found myself thoroughly entertained all the way through.

I’ve read several of this author’s books, so I am familiar with her talent for telling compelling stories. Like all the best reads, I couldn’t put it down from the very first page.

The heroine is a strong woman whose world falls apart at the death of her son and the prospect of his heart being donated to someone else. I loved how the author handled this intensely sensitive subject while keeping the mystery side of the story at the forefront. I liked that there is a creepiness to a few of the characters, too, so you never know for sure who the good guys are.

What I love about this book is that it is beautifully told by two different women in alternating narratives, mixing a local legend with a more modern tale.

I really like the way the author presents two distinct voices and yet retains the richness of her language in each. The setting of the watermill, too, is superb, and the author’s ability to describe each scene perfectly adds to the tension as each aspect of the story snowballs its way to a thrilling conclusion.

I love finding new authors! Which is why I’m recommending another debut novel—this time from Marion Todd. It won the Bloody Scotland Scottish Crime Debut Novel of the Year 2020. Since then she has published (at the time of writing) a further 4 novels in her series about detective inspector Clare Mackay. I wish I could write that fast! Her serial killer haunts St Andrews, Scotland by luring victims to a stretch of road and then running them over—simple but effective. It can be difficult to write a pacey thriller and develop interesting characters at the same time but Todd manages this admirably. As soon as I finished this novel, I went straight on to the second in the series which is equally as good and I look forward to reading the rest.

This is a beautiful story full of heart and empathy, and a welcome reminder of the kindness of strangers and the innocence of childhood.

Ken Follett’s breakthrough novel is a taut and thrilling wartime espionage tale set during World War II. But there is sufficient naval action to include it in this list. I felt it was a wonderfully atmospheric novel.

It centres on Henry Faber, a ruthless German spy nicknamed “The Needle” for his deadly stiletto. Faber uncovers the Allies’ deception surrounding the D-Day invasion and races to deliver the intelligence to Nazi command. His journey leads him to Storm Island, where he encounters Lucy Rose, a lonely Englishwoman whose emotional entanglement with Faber becomes pivotal. As MI5 closes in, the novel builds to an exciting naval warfare climax.

Follett masterfully blends suspense, romance, and historical intrigue in this compelling tale of loyalty and betrayal.

The Shetland Bus was a great operation fighting against the German occupation of Norway and David Howarth, second in command of the organization, brings a personal and knowledgeable telling of its history in The Shetland Bus. This book inspired me to write my novel. It is an amazing story of courage and skill. Fishermen on the west coast of Norway began to run fishing boats to England at the beginning of the war. Known as the North Sea Traffic, it eventually became formalized under British command. The Bus only worked during the dark of winter, when sea and weather conditions were dangerous, bringing over arms and agents, taking back refugees. Later, submarine chasers, the Hessa, Hitra, and Vigra, served from 1943 to the end of the war. 

Lee Miller was the most unlikely of war correspondents. As a fashion model for Condé Nast, a surrealist collaborator of Man Ray, and a celebrity New York photographer, world events never impacted much on her work. It’s a gripping, edge-of-your-seat story that’s guaranteed to have you bawling by the end.  

Obviously, I’d need a time machine to have dinner with Kit as a young woman, but she could still be around today, recounting heroic tales from that awful time. Kit is super brave and she’s persevered through unimaginable circumstances. Even if she didn’t want to share her stories, I’d invite her as a thank you for the sacrifices she and all service people made so we have the freedom we have today.
