I studied Shakespeare in community college, for my bachelor's degree in English, and for my master's degree in English. Jodi Picoult managed to make reading about his work entertaining as she offered an alternative explanation for the quality of the writing despite his lack of education. I enjoyed the dual timelines that served as a reflection of the prejudices and issues the woman in each era faced. This is a keeper, and one I'll re-read!

Dirrayawadha (Rise Up) by best-selling Wiradyuri author, Dr Anita Heiss, is an outstanding Australian historical novel. - truth-telling through fiction, a story of love and resilience in a time of war.
I loved this beautifully written book, especially the weaving of Wiradyuri language throughout as part of storytelling, and critically, Mother Earth’s poignant contemplation and her comments, book-ending this story.
In Anita’s acknowledgements, she writes “Dirrayawadha is probably the most important book I will ever write.”
I believe her. The love story between Miinaa and Dan is heartbreakingly beautiful, but the tragedy and utter desecration and displacement of the indigenous people, is gut wrenching and horrifying.

I devoured Chasing Tropical Ice in a couple of sittings. Elizabeth Worley has skilfully woven a gripping thriller that combines crime, adventure, diamonds, dogs, and feminist empowerment. I loved the two leads, Augusta (Gus), a journalist, whose voice is written in first person, and her lover, Kaye (written in third person), a retired Air Force pilot. I especially enjoyed the vivid imagery and scene setting, as well as all the local references and titbits about expats living in Panama. An enthralling page-turner with a cracking ending.

I am Australian but have lived in four other countries – England, Nigeria, USA, and Qatar – so I love reading about life overseas. How does the weather impact daily life, from what people wear to the available activities? How does culture influence behavior? Food, from what’s in the supermarket to the menus at local restaurants, can change the flavors and smells in homes and on the street. And what about alcohol? Does banning wine and spirits impact the vibe? (Hint: yes, it does!) These factors play out in my writing, and I love seeing how other authors portray place on the page.

Having lived as an expat for thirteen years, the title immediately grabbed me. I’ve since read all of Chris Pavone’s books.

Kate moved to Luxembourg for her husband’s job and is trying to settle into her role as a housewife, but a series of strange events make her wonder whether her past life in an unconventional career is catching up with her.

I related to Kate’s struggles of leaving a job she loved to focus on family, both the positives and negatives (minus the life-threatening danger). When I left my career, I started writing to create a portable job I could take with me as we traveled the world for my husband’s work, so I completely understood Kate’s need to find purpose in her life.

I am Australian, and while I haven’t been to Newcastle, the atmospheric bushland, venomous snakes, and stunning but treacherous coastline made me feel right at home. This is Lee Christine’s hometown, and her love and respect for the land are right there on the page.

Layer in a detective with a complicated past, a journalist with a connection to the case, a dead judge, and missing lawyers, and Lee has created a wonderful blend of intrigue, scandal, and budding romance.

I enjoy mysteries with well-developed characters who make me care about their personal lives as well as wanting to solve the case, and Lee achieved this.

Andrea's book list on mystery novels with a strong sense of place

Andrea Barton Why Andrea loves this book

This book combines two of my greatest loves: ballroom dance and mystery novels. The ballroom dance world is designed for drama, especially when the competition is at Blackpool, the Mecca of ballroom dance.

I was fascinated to see this novel was co-written. Shirley Ballas brings the wealth of her ballroom dance experience to the party, including being head judge of Strictly Come Dancing. Her partner, author Sheila McClure, delivers the literary skills. A fabulous partnership.

Book two is out soon, and I can’t wait.

I lived in Lagos for four and a half years, so a mystery in Nigeria grabbed my attention right away. Vanessa’s descriptions are so vivid that I was transported back there on the page.
