Since discovering the Enneagram a few years ago, I’ve been absolutely fascinated by the psychology behind personalities. Each one is unique, influenced by innumerable things from both nature and nurture. And the misunderstandings that come from different types of interaction have contributed significantly to challenges in my personal life. But they also make stories more interesting to read, especially when you get to see things from the perspective of multiple different characters. Nothing is juicier to me as a reader than watching characters initially misunderstand and dislike each other, but over time grow to understand and even respect each other as close friends and/or romantic interests as the story unfolds!
She insults him with Shakespeare. This line from the blurb sold me on this futuristic steampunk fantasy because what does that even mean? But finding out was super fun, and I absolutely loved watching these enemies become lovers through the MMC and FMC’s perspectives.
Like the other books in this list, there are additional POVs besides the main love interests that add depth, humor, and emotion to the story, and the world contains an interesting mix of sci-fi and fantasy elements that work well together.
As with Six of Crows, I recommend having book two handy right off the bat because the cliffhanger ending to this book will leave you scrambling for what happens next!

I picked up this book from the library and instantly fell in love. It was such a good portal fantasy standalone that I read it in one day–almost in one sitting!
The main character, Tessa, stumbles into a dangerous, magical world full of twists and turns, inhuman characters, and a dark circus that kept me hooked. She suffered memory loss from time in a mental asylum before the start of the book, which just made everything that much more intriguing as I followed her journey with the immortal Nicolai in the Mirror Lands.
This book was magical, adventurous, romantic, and all-around fun! Plus, the ending stuck with me long after I’d finished reading. I still remember going on a walk after and thinking, “I want to read that again!”

This was the most beautiful kind of slow-burn read for me. The characters gently pulled me in as the story wove together, and before long, I couldn’t help being thoroughly invested in Gemma, Milo, and Ollie’s story. I don’t read contemporary fantasy as much, but a book like this–where themes of friendship, family, enduring love, and dealing with change and grief abound–is almost guaranteed to draw me in.
This book did just that and then some! The memory exploration aspect of the book is a unique take involving dreams and magic, and a large part of why this book hits so hard by the end! Did I cry reading it? Yes. Do I have regrets? Absolutely not!

I’ve never thrown a book across the room harder than this one. While book one of The Dark Artifices had a fabulous cliffhanger, nothing could ever compare to the utter devastation book two, Lord Of Shadows, managed.

This series follows Percy Jackson from the original middle grade content to a young adult era. The stand-out cliffhanger of the series, The Mark of Athena, is bursting with page-turning action and follows multiple characters, but it’s the steadily growing romance between Percy and Annabeth that drives the stakes.

I love a good fairytale retelling and Melanie Cellier’s are consistently ones I enjoy. This retelling of The Little Mermaid caught my attention with the way it twists the amnesia trope. Rather than one character dealing with missing memories, the entire world has forgotten one of their fellow kingdoms, now submerged underwater. I thought that was such a clever twist and made for a fascinating foundation for the story!

The transformation of the MMC in this book is one of my all-time epic favorites. This dude. He is a walking wall of stone with the tiniest tender side we barely ever get a glimpse of. And he brings more than enough “enemy” to the enemies-to-lovers aspect of this series. But his POV chapters were my favorite to read because when his heart of ice starts melting, he falls hard. And it is so satisfying to read!
The perspectives of the FMC and other characters in both the palaces and the rebel forces add depth, magic, scandal, mystery, and loads of excitement. There’s plenty going on besides the central romance, and the two aspects are well-balanced. This series is in the top three ish of those that I’ve reread the most.

Told from a total of six perspectives, this book begins with the single most amazing prologue I’ve ever read. We learn that the clairvoyant family members of the FMC have predicted her whole life that one day, she will kill her true love. And it just so happens that a relative has come for a visit and immediately announces that this is the year the FMC will fall in love.
It’s so freaking good!
Of course watching that unfold from both the FMC and the MMC’s POVs kept me flipping pages fast, but I also enjoyed the other friendships, struggles, and romances happening in the other POVs. A solid multi-POV series I frequently recommend!

As a pirate fantasy author myself, I have a profound love for the sea and the summer winds that these stories encapsulate. Growing up on the east coast, my favorite summers were spent on the Jersey Shore, digging for buried treasure on the beach, or searching for mermaids beneath the waves.
