Why read it?

9 authors picked The God of the Woods as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

God of the Woods has it all: a captivating story, great characters and setting, and an intriguing mystery. I was hooked from the beginning.

The audiobook, by the way, is excellent.

I was surprised by this book - I wasn’t expecting to be as immersed in it as I was. I needed to know what happened next.

If you've read my Cupid's Fall books, you know I'm a BIG fan of the true God of the Woods, aka Pan. Though this book turned out to be light on mythology, The God of the Woods is a deeply satisfying, unpredictable story worth every word of hype it's received. Liz Moore nails this multi-generational family trauma, making over a dozen three-dimensional characters jump right off the page - from the patriarchs who seem to have bred all the trouble with their bloated expectations and inappropriate appetites, to the unfortunate wives and innocent kids caught up in their hornet's nest…

At first it seems that this book is about teenagers at a summer camp. Then it gradually evolves to explore deep emotions and happenings. It is profoundly moving in its exploration of people's lives and an unfolding mystery.

This is an immersive, challenging mystery that I couldn't put down. In addition to telling a great story, it takes on issues of class and gender in ways that are completely relevant to the story being told.

I've liked all of Liz Moore's books, but this one might be her best. I'm a sucker for any book that puts a bunch of teenage girls in a socially awkward situation because when it's done well, it's like reliving the best and worst of my teen years, only with even more pathos.

Book cover of The Guardian of the Palace

The Guardian of the Palace by Steven J. Morris,

The Guardian of the Palace is the first novel in a modern fantasy series set in a New York City where magic is real—but hidden, suppressed, and dangerous when exposed.

When an ancient magic begins to leak into the world, a small group of unlikely allies is forced to act…

As a child who went to sleep away camp, I was immediately immersed in this mystery centered at a summer camp in the Adirondacks. Moore's writing is brilliant, and each character made their mark, evoking a full range of emotions. The novel ran the gamut: visual, evocative, and suspenseful. I flipped pages fast, but at the same time, savored every word.

This book had pitch-perfect characters. I was able to fully inhabit their thoughts and feelings and this was done masterfully for a wide range of characters. I loved the world of the book, and I could not read it fast enough to find out what happened.

There's nothing better than reading an ambitious, deeply immersive mystery that's flawlessly executed, too. This one will go down as a favorite of all time.
