I thoroughly enjoyed this fun, thought-provoking romp with a truly original premise: what happens when a woman returns home one day to a husband of 35 years that she's never met before? If that twist doesn't grab you, how about when that guy goes into the attic, a different husband descends? Once the narrator realizes what's going on, she can (sort of) control how long each man sticks around, which is where the story really gets interesting. Because with each husband, Laura finds herself in a whole new version of her own life. And it begs the question, When do you stop trying to do better and start actually living? Even though it's centered around love and relationships, you wouldn't call it romance. This book definitely makes you think about who you want to share you life with (if anyone).

I'm always a sucker for time travel, and Gillian McAllister makes great use of the fantasy element as a wonderful storytelling vehicle for this cozy thriller. This page turner grabbed me right from the start, with the mother gazing out the kitchen window to find her son involved in a murder! We suffer through the inevitable consequences of his actions for the rest of that very long day, but the real story begins when the mother wakes up the next morning at the beginning of the previous day! I really appreciate the author's loyalty to details and the realistic timeline of different tech inventions. I also appreciated the complicated marital dynamics as discoveries are made. But what has me recommending this book to everyone I know is how the mother-son relationship is depicted: rich and layered and quite beautiful.

It's every parent's nightmare.
Your happy, funny, innocent son commits a terrible crime: murdering a complete stranger.
If you've read my Cupid's Fall books, you know I'm a BIG fan of the true God of the Woods, aka Pan. Though this book turned out to be light on mythology, The God of the Woods is a deeply satisfying, unpredictable story worth every word of hype it's received. Liz Moore nails this multi-generational family trauma, making over a dozen three-dimensional characters jump right off the page - from the patriarchs who seem to have bred all the trouble with their bloated expectations and inappropriate appetites, to the unfortunate wives and innocent kids caught up in their hornet's nest of appearances and disappointment. Through Inspector Judyta Luptack, a youngish but highly capable woman proving herself in a man's world, the reader sifts through the investigation of not one but two mysterious disappearances in the same family 14 years apart. Partly set in the 60s/70s at a summer camp, this book gives strong Yellow Jacket vibes.

“Extraordinary . . . Reminds me of Donna Tartt’s 1992 debut, The Secret History . . . I was so thoroughly submerged in a rich fictional world, that for hours I barely came up for air.” —Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air, NPR
“Riveting from page one to the last breathless word.” —Rebecca Makkai, New York Times bestselling author of I Have Some Questions For You
First Quiver is a wickedly fun, mythology-infused romp where ancient gods meddle in modern love—and Cupid finally gets a taste of his own medicine. Banished from Olympus for one prank too many, the 3,375-year-old virgin lands in present-day Indiana, where mortals are oblivious to divine drama. But Cupid's magnificent human form and freedom from his overbearing mother Aphrodite come with a terrible punishment: he must find the Right Love match for the mortal he desperately loves, and then he must let her go.
Caught between two worlds on a quest to fix Love, Cupid must survive the violent throes of his own coming of age and triumph over the powerful gods conspiring against him. Failure will not be tolerated; success will cost him everything.
