In 2014 I finally came to the realization that I had become the most negative person I knew. I couldn't stand being that whiney, unhappy person anymore. So even though I didn't know how I was going to do it, I made a no-turning-back decision to kill off Negative Past Mel and become Positive Future Mel. The first step in my how was a book that taught me how to create a morning routine. That book saved me and set me on a path of personal growth and development and helped me take my first steps forward to becoming a version of Future Mel I actually enjoy being!
As far as books that help you understand yourself go, this one is at the top of my list! I never understood why I was so resistant to the pressure of others, why accountability buddies didn’t work for me (even though they worked so well for other people), and why my husband was always so insistent about following the rules! Understanding that my superpower is asking great questions is what ultimately led me to coaching and writing my own book. I promise knowing more about how you respond to expectations will help you in so many ways.
OBLIGER? REBEL? QUESTIONER? UPHOLDER? Which one are you?
Everyone falls into 1 of 4 personality types and knowing yours could make you happier and more successful. During her investigation to understand human nature, explored most recently in her bestselling Better Than Before, Gretchen Rubin realised that by asking the seemingly dry question 'How do I respond to expectations?' we gain life changing self-knowledge.
She discovered that based on their answer, people fit into Four Tendencies: Upholders, Questioners, Obligers, and Rebels. Our Tendency shapes every aspect of our behaviour, so using this framework allows us to…
If you’ve never read (or enjoyed) non-fiction, start with Charles Duhigg. I’m not lying when I say this one is a real page-turner. One minute you’ll be learning about cognitive tunneling and wondering if that plane is really going to crash and the next you’ll be in the middle of a high-stakes poker game! I usually only remember one or two things from each book I read, but this one has stuck with me like glue. After all the page-turning, you’ll have a better understanding of how your brain works and how to leverage it to your advantage.
In his international bestseller The Power of Habit, Pulitzer Prize-winner Charles Duhigg explained why we do what we do. Now he applies the same relentless curiosity and masterful analysis to the question: how can each of us achieve more?
Drawing on the very latest findings in neuroscience, psychology and behavioural economics, he demonstrates the eight simple principles that govern productivity. He demonstrates how the most dynamic and effective people - from CEOs to film-makers to software entrepreneurs - deploy them. And he shows how you can, too.
'Charles has some wonderful advice for increasing productivity . . . the tips…

Jan Bergstrom,
Learn to understand and work with your childhood wounds. Do you feel like old wounds or trauma from your childhood keep showing up today? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed with what to do about it and where to start? If so, this book will help you travel down a path…
The most important thing I learned from this book is that “winners take breaks!” I was the kind of person who kept pushing and pushing and pushing myself because I thought that was how I would get ahead. I never understood the scientifically proven benefits of taking breaks. There’s a lot of other great stuff in here, but even that small tidbit permanently changed how I work.
Timing is everything. But we don't know much about timing itself. Timing, it's often assumed, is an art; in When, Pink shows that timing is in fact a science.
Drawing on a rich trove of research from psychology, biology and economics, Pink reveals how best to live, work and succeed. How can we use the hidden patterns of the day to build the ideal schedule? Why do certain breaks dramatically improve student test scores? How can we turn a stumbling beginning into a fresh start? When should you have your first coffee of the day? Why is singing in time…
I reread this book every year. It’s super short, but it’s so dense with wisdom I only read a couple of pages at a time and then marinate on what I’ve read. If you struggle with taking things personally, gossiping, trying to do better than your best, or assuming the worst (all things I was guilty of) grab a copy of this book. Go with a print copy so you can highlight all your favorite parts.
In The Four Agreements, bestselling author don Miguel Ruiz reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy and create needless suffering. Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, The Four Agreements offer a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform our lives to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love.
• A New York Times bestseller for over a decade • Translated into 46 languages worldwide
“This book by don Miguel Ruiz, simple yet so powerful, has made a tremendous difference in how I think and act in every encounter.” — Oprah Winfrey

I love Jen Sincero. You can’t go wrong with one of her books, but this one was my favorite. Not only did her funny stories keep me turning the pages, she helped me finally understand the scarcity mindset I’ve been clinging to for my whole life. Plan on doing a lot of journaling with this one!
From the author of You Are A Badass, the New Your Times bestselling book everyone is talking about.
YOU ARE A BADASS AT MAKING MONEY is the book you need if you've spent too much time watching money land in your bank account and then roll through your fingers. Jen Sincero went from living in a converted garage to traveling the world in 5-star luxury in a matter of years, and knows all too well the layers of BS one can get wrapped up in around money, as well as what it takes to dig your way out.
This is not just another follow-your-dreams goals book or a stronger, better, faster book. This is a book about you and what you want. Even if you don’t know what you want… yet. This book is for you: if you’re not sure what you want; if you’re tired of the usual advice not working for you; if you struggle with motivation; if you feel like you’re running out of time; if you’re looking for hope and encouragement.
I have spent years coaching and encouraging countless people through my newsletters, webinars, public appearances, and courses to help them recognize their superpowers, embrace their desires, and make stuff happen!
