Galina Vromen ❤️ loved this book because...

This book touches on so much that is important in life: growing up, enduring love in its many forms, the meaning of community. It depicts with incredible sensitivity and insight rural life in Ireland in a way that is both very specific and universal. The writing is gorgeous, one needs to imbibe this book slowly, it leaves a wonderful after-taste.

Book cover of Songs for the Brokenhearted

Galina Vromen ❤️ loved this book because...

This book beautifully delves into the themes of grief, love, daughter-mother relations and national identity against the background of the immigration of Jews from Arab countries to Israel in the 1950s and the integration/or lack thereof of their children in Israeli society. The writing is wonderful, the characters flawed by relatable, the plot has enough tension to keep the reader engaged. A wonderful book.

Book cover of On Call

Galina Vromen ❤️ loved this book because...

I found this autography of Anthony Fauci, an this ethnically Italian New Yorker who made good to become a leading figure in public health in America, fascinating. He talks about his life with an appealing blend of earnestness and humor, a bit of self-deprecation and a lot of compassion for his fellow human beings. I learned a lot about how public health developed under the seven presidents whom he worked with, and a lot about the development of medicine to cope with AIDS and other infectious diseases. A very engaging book.

Don‘t forget about my book 😀

Book cover of Hill of Secrets

What is my book about?

Los Alamos, 1943. Nuclear scientists and their families face the toll of keeping secrets from the world and each other in this gripping, historical wartime novel sure to attract readers of Kate Quinn and Rhys Bowen.

When Robert Oppenheimer gathers a group of scientists at the clandestine desert outpost of Los Alamos to create the world’s first nuclear weapon, their families move there as well with no explanation other than to “Stand by. Make do. And above all, don’t ask questions.”

Christine Sharp, forced to abandon her art restoration business in New York to support her husband’s career, struggles to reinvent herself.

She meets and forges an unlikely friendship with Gertie, the precocious teenage daughter of German-Jewish refugee and prominent physicist Kurt Koppel. Gertie enlists Christine to help her capture the heart of Jimmy, a shy soldier, and to deal with parents haunted by their past.

Kurt, anguished by what the Nazis have done to his family and bent on defeating them, carries burdens he longs to share but cannot confide in his wife ― leading him to find comfort elsewhere.

In this immersive novel of suppressed yearning, irrepressible love and wracking guilt, the lives of fictional characters intertwine with real-life figures. Like Oppenheimer and his team, they must contend with the moral questions and aftermath of creating the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
