Why read it?
2 authors picked On Call as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
I found this autography of Anthony Fauci, an this ethnically Italian New Yorker who made good to become a leading figure in public health in America, fascinating. He talks about his life with an appealing blend of earnestness and humor, a bit of self-deprecation and a lot of compassion for his fellow human beings. I learned a lot about how public health developed under the seven presidents whom he worked with, and a lot about the development of medicine to cope with AIDS and other infectious diseases. A very engaging book.
I was involved in the HIV epidemic from the very beginning as President of the Hemophilia Association of New York.
The behind-the-scenes information that Dr. Fauci provides helped inform me and remind me of what we – and the world – went through. During the COVID epidemic, Dr. Fauci had to manage the crazy political system more than he ever had to, and he is very frank about what he experienced.
The book and its details made me grateful for his lifetime of wonderful work.
From Edward's list on dealing with a scary health diagnosis.
