I loved this book because, again, it was thought-provoking. It was unimaginable to think humans could behave in this way and then it made me realise that we do behave in an unimaginable fashion in real life. I’ve always loved the idea of time travel. I was born in a Northern mill town where King Cotton ruled. By the time I was a teenager, all the mills had shut, leaving behind empty hulks. I desperately wanted to experience the town in its heyday. I devoured the Blackburn-set memoir The Road to Nab End, by William Woodruff: I could hear the clogs strike the cobbles, picture the waves of workers, smell the belching chimneys. While I couldn’t travel back in time for real, I could in my imagination. My debut children’s novel, out in Spring 2026, is about a time-travelling seventh son.

I have been writing for more than 40 years, and while I don’t normally write gothic literature, it is a genre that has fascinated me since my early youth. While I have written a couple of gothic or horror short stories, I tend to write other types of literature. However, I was pulled into this novel by something I saw on the TV news, and so I put away the novel I was originally working on and set to work on this one instead. The setting and the characters immediately pulled me in. I hope that it’s mystery and unusual characters will do the same for you.
I loved this book because it combines the gothic tradition with politics. Written during the Soviet era, it deals with the Devil and his entourage who visit Soviet-era Moscow and reveal Soviet society.
While not truly a gothic novel, it is an imaginative work and kept me mesmerized as an undergraduate student so much that I have gone back to read it again as an adult.

Salman Rushdie Has long been one of my favorite writers. On the day of his attack, I was devastated. Salman Rushdie’s unique style of writing has always affected me. His writing style is so unique that it gets deep into your soul.
This book is extremely well written. It is moving and uplifting at the same time. It gave me hope that good can overcome evil. Salman Rushdie hides nothing from us in this book.
The part of the book that affected me the most was where Salman has a make-believe conversation with his would-be murderer. It’s written so that you find it hard to believe that this conversation never took place. The description of the attack is both shocking but also takes you to another level. When the writer describes those 20 seconds he spent with his attacker, it is quite shocking to read.
