I love how utterly imperfect all of the characters are in this book.
Amish fiction can err on the side of being too idealistic, but not this book! But each character, as thoroughly unique and flawed as they are, is also incredibly lovable.
The older I get, the more I realize that I’m “the weird one,” and my family is in no way perfect. There is not a lot normal about me, but it’s heartening to read about oddball characters who have depth, heart, and a purpose, too. I could really identify.

This book has one timeline set in WW2, and follows a Mennonite family—some of whom embraced Hitler’s ideologies. My family ancestry is Mennonite, and this story is both shocking and realistic.

As a middle-aged woman, I enjoy a romance with more mature characters.
I’m not a young thing anymore, and I’m no longer naïve. I’ve lived a lot, and I’ve known a lot of people who’ve gone through ordeals in relationships. So it’s nice to read a story where the characters have experienced a bit more.
But it’s also a good reminder that no matter how mature we are, love is love! And it can side-swipe the best of us!

I love a story that can pull me away from my own stresses and introduce me to brand new fictional ones!
I can be hard to impress at this point in the game, but Jennifer Spredemann is able to pull me into an authentic Amish world and make me feel the environment around me in just a few words.

I’ve visited Amish communities for years as a tourist. An agent suggested I write it because of my faith in God. The Amish base their lifestyle and traditions on their faith in God, and she felt the books would be more authentic if the author felt the same. I’ve never been Amish, but the topic is fun to research, and some of the Amish are forthcoming in helping me. I love the fried chicken, homemade butterscotch pie, corn pudding, and beautiful quilts they have available when visiting the different Ohio and Indiana communities. They are not my typical audience.

I am a teacher, so I have to find books that are engaging enough for the kids to stay interested for long periods of reading time. Also, I have 11 kids and 19 grandkids (and still counting…) so we spend a lot of time reading at my house. I love that this book makes you feel like you are right there getting to know the characters. The author does a great job describing their actions and personalities and makes you fall in love with them. Even though this is a book for kids, as an adult, I wanted to finish reading it after I had read the first page. It is hilarious in a fun, not silly, way.

Fresh from college, I arrived in South Korea in 1976 to teach English as a Peace Corps Volunteer, and despite my naivete, or maybe because of it, I fell in love with the country—the people, the food, the culture, the history. I have since lived and worked in many other countries, but Korea will always be my first love and I have returned many times for both work and pleasure. When I became a fiction writer, I was keen to read the work of Korean novelists who, naturally, had an even better understanding of their culture than I did, and I love staying connected to the country in this way.
This novel is a murder mystery, of sorts, that also has a lot to say about socio-economic divides in contemporary Korea. This was particularly interesting to me because when I lived there in the 1970s, everyone was poor. No one owned a motorbike, much less a car, and they were all barely scraping by. Now, though, great wealth and privilege have emerged alongside persistent poverty, and that class divide looks too familiar to Americans. The rich are privileged and have access to things the poor do not, including justice.
