Books like The Storyteller — picked by fans

Few books have reminded me more powerfully that our circumstances and our inner life are not the same thing.

I first read Man's Search for Meaning years ago, and its impact has only deepened over time. Frankl's willingness to look directly at suffering without becoming defined by it challenged many of the assumptions I carried about happiness, success, and what it takes to live a meaningful life.

I return to this book because it continually reminds me that meaning is not something life hands us once everything finally goes our way. It is something we discover in how we meet what life places before us.

During difficult seasons of my own life, Frankl's perspective helped me remember that even when we cannot control our circumstances, we still have a relationship with how we respond to them. Few books have given me more courage, perspective, and hope.

When I visited Auschwitz-Birkenhau I was struck by the Australia plaque at the rear of the camp whose first three lines read, "Forever Let This Place Be; A Cry of Despair: And a Warning to Humanity."

Similarly, I was drawn to Wiese’s work when, in his preface to Night, he tells us he feels “he has a moral obligation to try to prevent the enemy from enjoying one last victory by allowing his crimes to be erased from human history.”

His is a brutal, first-hand account of the horrors and atrocities in Auschwitz. He appears to leave no stone unturned as he recounts the events from his admission to the camp, his life of survival juxtaposed with the protection of his father amidst the dehumanization of his fellow prisoners, to the eventual liberation, including the Death March, during which his father perished.

I was taught by my author daughter that if I am to write a character-driven novel, I should write as the characters, not about them.

As I reflected on my daughter’s advice, I instantly recalled the power of de Rosnay’s portrayal of Sarah’s relationship with her baby brother. She manages to bare the soul of Sarah from her time as a ten-year-old to that of an adult who takes her own life, unable to cope with the consequences of a choice she makes in relation to her young brother.

De Rosnay leads me gently at first into the mind of a ten-year-old girl trying to save her brother from captivity by the Nazis. I could feel her initial desperation morphing into a sense of relief and even satisfaction at her decision to hide him in a secret closet from which he would soon be rescued (in her imagination).

I visited the Anne Frank House.

I climbed the stairs to the annex. I passed by the bookcase that had hidden the family for just over 2 years. I sat on the beds, I stared at the pictures, I peered through the small window, but try as I could, I was unable to imagine the excruciating array of emotions that Anne and her family and friends must have experienced. 

In all my favourite, should this be a suitable descriptor, books about the Holocaust, I am drawn to stories of hope and optimism against the odds, and of the harsh realities of the lengths we can, must, and will go to, to both protect those we love and/or to try to secure our own survival.

For me, there is no better account of these characteristics than Anne Frank’s descriptions of life in the attic at Prinsengracht 263-267, 1016 GV Amsterdam. Rather… show more.

I love how much Mercy learns about herself. I also really admire the time and space and, above all, respect Briggs's investments in Mercy's witting and unwitting explorations of her powers and heritage. And how Mercy reacts to revelations about her mother and mostly unknown father. I, at least, admire when Mercy is allowed to get cranky and try to pick and choose what she wants to keep or discard, approve or disapprove.

All this, and it's a heck of a roller coaster ride. I rode the slow build-up, increasingly bracing myself for the first big drop, and then whoop-whoop-whoop, I whirled up and down and sideways to the end.

I’m a sucker for a vigilante story. I’ve watched just about all of the Batman and Robin Hood adaptations.

Add superpowers and a war between angels and demons beyond the veil of mortal sight, and I’m hooked. That’s exactly what I was with Cloak of the Light.

I devoured this book and immediately ordered and finished the rest of the series. Chuck Black knows how to weave a good story, and this one does a fantastic job of intersecting two stories from vastly different points of view. This book came to me at a time when I needed encouragement, and it gave me just that. I can’t remember reading a series so quickly, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This book will have you rooting for the main character and thinking about how easily we can fall prey to the influence of evil in our world.  

This was one of the first fiction books I read that set before me a world that is ordinary interrupted, and affected by another world that is supernatural.

In this book, when the main character goes to sleep, he wakes up in another world populated by mysterious beings and people.

Perhaps most interesting about this set up, is that events in this “dream world” affect events in the waking one.

While the main character only retains a passive ability (entering this other world and healing) the whole traveling between both spaces, his interactions with both divine and malevolent beings, and his race to stop his world from destruction all pulled me into the story in such a way that I could not put down.

At times, C.S. Lewis eschewed writing what would be expected of him. For example, every volume of his Chronicles of Narnia takes the reader in a new direction, a new aspect of that fantasy world, instead of merely rehashing the popular story of the first novel, as many series do.

Science Fiction was not his field, yet Dr. Lewis dived into the genre for three novels and proved he was a master. The third book in Dr. Lewis’s space trilogy continues the epic interplanetary story of the first two but brings the tale to a dystopian Earth.

At first, the story seems unrelated to the earlier space-traveling books of the trilogy, as an engrossing study of professors playing politics and strange dreams. As the novel progresses, however, this proves to be a much larger story involving aliens, demons, the very fabric of human existence, and the return of Merlin. 

The Sweep series was one of the first witch series I ever read, and I promise you that it is still so, so good. Plus, there are 15 books to provide hours of entertainment. The story is very Wicca-based with well-described details of rituals and rites that will immerse you in each scene. I was immediately drawn to the main character, Morgan, and her struggles as she learns of her powers. The characters engage in familiar teenage drama, but everything is heightened by the magic they’re immersed in. Suspenseful, fast-paced, and just a little bit dangerous. 

I am a lifelong Stephen King fan. I was that potbellied kid, perpetually with a stack of books, who insisted that the librarian let me check out Skeleton Crew, even if she told me it would absolutely give me nightmares. One of many, and often. I read the classics like The Stand and It–and watched the TV and film adaptations of Uncle Stevie’s best. Stephen King’s love of pop culture (music, movies, comic books) is evident in most of what he writes, no less so than in his magnum opus: The Dark Tower series.
