100 Books Like The Seismic Shift In Leadership

I went into reading this book thinking, “not me!” Ha! This book opened my eyes to ingrained behaviors that, at some point in my life, worked to my advantage. While there were definitely habits that I haven’t fallen prey to, a few hit very close to home.

I venture to guess that every woman reading this book will relate to a few of the twelve habits that hold women back. Even if there is only one habit in the entire book that resonates, making a shift away from that behavior will elevate your impact as a leader. Admittedly, I still catch myself–it takes practice.

As the mom of an extreme introvert, I listened to this book to better understand my child. It taught me so much about how introverts think, process information, but most importantly, what they need around communication. As a leader, understanding the differences in the way people think, work, and engage will enable you to get the most out of them.

I retrained myself to approach my daughter differently as a result of this book. It helped me explain myself to her and made her feel understood by me. Grateful for this book. Imagine if we did that in the workplace!

I love this book because it not only reinforced many of the things I already believed, but it also made me look at the ideas from a different angle. I love it when a book is actionable, and I found the questions, especially the ones at the end of chapter 4, helped me take stock of my behaviors and choose something specific to work on.

I actually like homework. I am now building a habit of asking important people in my life, “What’s one thing that would improve our relationship?” And I am seeing a difference.

I love this book because it is real, it is now, and it is so relatable. It made me flash back to my days in finance in the early 90s, dealing with the same issues. I really appreciate that Jennifer presents tactical strategies to overcome old school hurdles, not by attempting to “fit in” but rather by us women embracing the natural skills and preferences of how we think and interact.

It has taken me a long time to embrace emotion and vulnerability and traits that lead to credibility and openness. This book helps me continue to remind myself of that lesson.

I know this book is meant to be about hosting gatherings, but I’ve applied the principles to nearly everything I do in work and hobbies to add more intention, impact, and fulfillment. I’ve changed the way I sit at restaurants to encourage deeper conversations with friends. I’ve started to purposefully not invite certain people to certain parties since I know it would change the dynamic negatively for others. I’ve embraced the idea of “pop-up rules” at every event I host and expect guests to follow them so that the event is transformative and not boring.

I really love this book because it changed the trajectory of my entire career. I was a business major in high school and continued as a business major while working on my bachelor’s degree. However, I did not feel that working only in business was my true passion.

Ori Brafman has multiple New York Times bestsellers, and his work specializes in building organizational cultures and leadership. As the author of the great book Starfish and Spider, Brafman is also the founder and president of Starfish Leadership and co-founder of the Fully Charged Institute. 

This is a book about leadership, and no one does it better than Marty Dempsey, and no one can capture it better than Ori Brafman.
