I expect that the folks at Shepherd.com approached me as a picture book author, since I’m the author of eleven picture books, including the four books of the Vampirina Ballerina series, which were adapted into the Disney Junior hit series Vampirina. But my thoughts and ideas about friendship and community really stem from once having been a child myself and from being a parent of four children, each of whom approached the roller coaster ride of childhood friendship in their unique ways. I was always happy to help them find answers in a book, even when those answers involved more, and deeper, questions.
A misunderstanding about the intended recipient of a love letter first brings Hedgehog, Bunny, and Squirrel great joy, but then threatens their friendship. In the end, Mouse helps them remember why they love each other. The final illustration even suggests that Mouse is joining their circle, since after all, love is unlimited. Who doesn’t love chocolate? This is what I ask myself very often. Being an award-winning children’s book author with a passion for chocolate and sweets, I began to wonder how healthy my lifestyle really is. As a writer, I’m always bickering with traditional plot structures, which I love for their comfort and familiarity and then turn against when a story becomes too obedient to them. As a reader…well, sometimes I flip to the end to see where we’re going so I can slow down and enjoy the journey more. Anytime we think we know what’s going to happen is an opportunity for suspense, and challenges and rebellions to those familiar story arcs can be twists in their own right.
Anybody I’ve ever talked mysteries with has heard me struggle to impart just how much I admire this book: the clarity and precision of Rendell’s narration, the brisk confidence in every characterization, and the way she challenges the conventional structure of the mystery novel from the first line: “Eunice Parchman killed the Coverdale family because she could not read or write.”
With that first line, I know the crime, the victims, the killer, even the motive—and yet I am utterly compelled to read on. I’ve read it four times, maybe more. I’m in awe of her confidence driving this book, and I love to be her passenger.

There’s a whole series if you find you like them, but each one stands on its own as a fun, steamy read.
