100 Books Like The Accidental Guardian

I loved how this wholesome romance novel effectively captured the essence of frontier life through its relatable characters and their interactions within a close-knit community. I especially liked the heroine, Hannah, who stands out due to her occupation as a tailor, which was quite unusual for women during that era. Initially, the hero misjudges Hannah, perceiving her as someone who prioritizes fashion over more serious matters.

This created much of the romantic tension that kept me turning pages. I really enjoyed the humor of Hannah’s attempts to assist the hero’s sister in finding a beau. This subplot not only provided me with laughter but also impressed me with how it enriched character relationships and showcased Hannah’s resourcefulness. 

I have a particular fondness for stories involving mail-order brides, and this one stood out for me due to its unique twist. A well-intentioned neighbor takes it upon himself to order a mail-order bride for the protagonist without his knowledge. To complicate matters further, Evelyn arrives in town completely unaware that the hero has not been informed of her arrival or her reason for coming. Despite this rocky start, they enter into a marriage of convenience.

I found their humorous exchanges delightful as they navigated their emotional challenges while trying to make their marriage work. However, what truly captivated me was how friends and family play pivotal roles in guiding the couple onto their path toward love.

I found this book to be incredibly enjoyable. I was captivated by Edythe’s experience as she tackles her first teaching job, which is set in a one-room schoolhouse in Nebraska. Initially, the town folks were delighted, as she replaced a teacher they deemed ruthless. However, their delight soon turned to dismay at Edythe’s teaching style, which made me laugh out loud. Not only did she shock the town by having her students catch bugs, but she also took them on an outrageous field trip to a women’s suffrage rally. Oh, my!

I loved the hero. As a widower, he believed that having a female teacher would provide just the kind of influence his two boys needed. However, with the town up in arms—along with his own uncertainties— he is unsure how much longer he can support her unconventional ways. This caused romantic conflict that kept me turning pages, eager to… show more.

I always enjoy fish-out-of-water stories, and this book is one of my favorites. Suffragette and outspoken Kathryn are banished from Boston to a wild California gold town. Did she learn her lesson and hold her tongue? Absolutely not! This and the fact that she’s determined to change the town puts her at odds with her new community.

Not only did I love the main characters, Kathryn and Matthias, but I also enjoyed the secondary characters. They each had distinct and, in some cases, quirky personalities, which added depth to the story and made me smile. The story deals with serious themes, but the humor, charm, and delightful romance kept me anxiously turning the pages to find out how it all turned out.

Simply put, Ms. Miller never fails to entertain me. She always gives a strong plot. I can count her to present strong women, and men who can appreciate them, even though they bug the hell out of them.

The purpose and goals of her characters are right up front in her stories. I like that, too; it keeps me turning the pages. Also, she places her stories in familiar territory. I can see myself there, among the citizens of her towns, her people. It’s relatable. I’m at home when I read her stories. 

Many books tend to glorify traveling the Oregon Trail, but this book does not. Instead, it portrays the heartbreak of loss, the realism of a harsh migration, and the blossoming of an unexpected but tender romance.

The pages raced by, and it was hard to step away from this captivating novel. I highly recommend reading it.

Terms of Endearment has every single thing that I search for in a perfect reading experience: engaging dialogue, humour, realistic life situations, and—in Aurora Greenway—one of the most memorable literary characters ever put to paper. In less capable hands, Terms of Endearment might simply have joined the ranks of hackneyed stories about a domineering parent and their submissive child. But through his mastery, McMurtry shows us that strength comes in many different guises. It’s not always the loudest person in the room who commands authority; quiet fortitude can be just as powerful as a brazen authority. I’ve learned this more than once in my own life, and I was delighted to see it illustrated here.

Like many authors, I’m a very picky reader and frequently abandon books after reading less than 10 percent. Over the past year or so, I’ve found myself abandoning more and more historicals because of poor writing, anachronisms, or unrealistic characters. I was beginning to despair of finding a book that met my standards, and then I opened A Cowboy for Keeps. Not only did Hedlund’s story meet my standards, it exceeded them. Her beautiful writing and vivid descriptions immersed me in the Old West, and the story itself was so riveting that while I wanted to see what happened next, part of me hated the idea of turning the last page. This is an outstanding historical romance.

This was my first Jenkins Historical Romance and it was by no means the last. I confess I picked up the book because I was tickled that the title was my last name, but the story. Wow. It gripped me hard from the start. The historical setting is the American West of the 1870s and involves a couple who pretend to be married, for just one evening. The pretense ends in scandal and a real marriage to save their reputations, and the hero’s journey to love is deeply emotional. Some of Jenkins’s contemporary-set romances have been made into movies and I keep my fingers crossed that one day they’ll choose some of her historicals.

Romance themes are easy for readers, but the escapism and scenarios are vast. This novel, set in the Big Apple, New York, hits the mark well. Some twists and turns, never knowing the final outcome. How random situations happen can make you think of serendipity at play.

Does fate have more control than you think? An intriguing concept. Thrown into the mix of engagements and weddings, tempers can flare. The stubbornness of characters with some excellent scenes where you feel the emotion and are in the midst of the story. Travels from the USA to Dublin, the story has a homely, feel-good vibe for romantic lovers. 

I found the writing tone tight and to the point in places, and I never quite knew how things would pan out for the key players.
