Matthew Becker Why Matthew loves this book

Vera Kurian's sophomore novel, A Step Past Darkness, proves that the success of her debut was no fluke. Dynamically different, more of a tome than most thrillers are, and yet still a book that you compels you to keep going, just finish that one more chapter over and over again until you've completed the entire book. The dual timeline with a group of kids in the 90s and the counterpart adults coming back together in current day provided plenty of Millenial nostalgia, but not just the rose-tinted version. Her ability to describe the emotion of a scene sets Kurian apart from many others—you don't just feel like you're there with the characters, you're able to feel all the same emotions her ensemble cast does. A remarkably different tone than Never Saw Me Coming, but just as compelling, and a novel that sticks in your mind long after you've finished it.

Every novel of Alex Finlay's makes me think of Harlan Coben's mastery of the domestic, close to home, thriller dripping with heart and emotion. If Something Happens To Me takes you on a wild ride, where years after his girlfriend is kidnapped our protagonist Ryan sees the man responsible and is sucked right back into the depths of combined hope and despair. I loved the way the seemingly disparate plots came together, and Finlay absolutely nailed the ending. He is a firm must-buy for me and I'd strongly encourage any readers of this to do the same.

"Insanely readable." ―Stephen King

Hailed as "breathtakingly suspenseful," Jean Hanff Korelitz’s The Plot is a propulsive read about a story too good not to steal, and the writer who steals it.

Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist with a respectably published first book. Today, he’s teaching in a third-rate MFA program and struggling to maintain what’s left of his self-respect; he hasn’t written―let alone published―anything decent in years. When Evan Parker, his most arrogant student,…

Dita Dow Author Of Sins in Black

From my list on small-town mystery books for fans of secrets, lies & twists.

Why am I passionate about this?

As a suspense thriller author and retired police detective, I’ve seen how ordinary people can hide the darkest secrets. That’s why I love small-town mysteries. They show the endless ways people cover up what they don’t want others to see, and they remind me of the unsettling truth I’ve witnessed firsthand: behind every neat house and familiar smile, there can be lies, betrayal, or danger and nothing is ever as safe as it looks.

Dita's book list on small-town mystery books for fans of secrets, lies & twists

Dita Dow Why Dita loves this book

I loved The Couple Next Door because it kept me glued to the page from start to finish.

I was fascinated by how an ordinary neighborhood could hide so much tension and deceit. It made me question how well we really know the people living right beside us. I found myself holding my breath, completely absorbed, and I couldn’t put it down until I knew everything.

Book cover of Little Secrets

Laura Wolfe Author Of The In-Laws

From my list on thrillers with killer twists you won't see coming.

Why am I passionate about this?

My fascination with things that go bump in the night probably stems from having read too many scary books in my younger years, when I devoured anything that made me want to hide under the blankets. My love of reading followed me into college, where I earned a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan and later a law degree from DePaul University in Chicago. My passion for reading—and, later, writingpsychological thrillers remained. Today, I write full-time and have five psychological thriller and suspense novels published with Bookouture–Hachette UK, including several that have made it into the Top 100 Books in the Amazon US, UK, and AU Kindle stores!

Laura's book list on thrillers with killer twists you won't see coming

Laura Wolfe Why Laura loves this book

Little Secrets is both brilliantly written and terrifying, making it one of my all-time favorite psychological thrillers. Eighteen months after Marin’s young son, Sebastian, was kidnapped as she shopped with him at a crowded Seattle market, both Marin and her marriage are hanging on by a thread. Desperate for answers, she hires a PI to help locate additional clues as to what happened to her son. As the secrets begin unraveling, the twists reveal themselves. Jennifer Hillier’s clean writing style and relatable characters drew me in, but the high tension and off-the-charts creep-factor kept me tearing through the pages all the way until the shocking ending.

I try to avoid books about cozy girls’ weekends because they always seem to descend into goopy sentimentalism and cutesy dialogue, but this novel (thank goodness!) turned that tired old trope on its head.

Psychological thrillers with twisty plotlines and complicated characters are my absolute favorite reads, and this one piles on the suspense as the questions and misunderstandings—and the danger––grow more sinister with each passing day.

My takeaway: attending a getaway in the forest with a bunch of people you haven’t seen in a decade is NOT A GOOD IDEA. Politely decline the invitation, then stay the hell away!
