The best books featuring writers in peril

When novelist Paul Sheldon suffers a terrible car accident, he finds himself in the care of Annie Wilkes, a woman who claims to be his biggest fan and wants to nurse him back to health. But Annie isn’t pleased with the way Paul has brought his beloved series featuring Misery Chastain to a close. 

I love that we get a front-row seat to this unhinged author-fan encounter. Despite the horror that’s inflicted, readers—especially ones who are also writers—may take a perverse pleasure in seeing a fan have such strong feelings about a fictional character. 

Another component I adore is the way an author’s ego often causes them to overlook warning signs that would set off alarm bells in others who have a clearer picture of what’s really going on.

The once-promising writer Jacob Finch Bonner is out of ideas and down on his luck. When his student Evan Parker proclaims that his work-in-progress is sure to be a runaway hit, Bonner waits to see if this bold proclamation comes to fruition. 

After Bonner learns Parker has died, he decides he’ll usher that story into the world—as his own. But someone knows Bonner isn’t the original author. Shame and suspense intertwine and heighten as this book speeds along. I enjoyed Korelitz’s exploration of how far an author will go for praise or even relevancy. 

This novel also explores an idea that fascinates me: Who “owns” a story? Just because something happened to you or your family, does that mean no one else can tell it or embellish it? Author Anne Lamott says you own everything that happened to you, but how much should you tell, and how will others react when you do? 

Much like The Plot, this novel features a writer who makes a terrible decision in an attempt to jumpstart her career.

What ensues is a satirical look at the publishing industry and the literary world in general. June, the main character, attempts to justify her actions, making readers cringe as she digs herself in deliciously deeper. A scary skewering of the writing life, I wanted to read this bestseller in a single setting.

Watching a fictional author attempt to appease the demands of publishing and, ultimately, experience the perils and pitfalls of popularity feels both relatable and voyeuristic.

An author knocks it out of the park with her debut and embarks on a book tour that should unfold like a dream come true. A stalker, however, is determined to destroy not just Tess Calloway’s newfound fame but also her entire life. Tess begins to question her sanity when no one believes she might be in danger.

Ryan does a fantastic job letting readers in and outlining just how vulnerable an author becomes when so much information about their tour is put on display. This will make writers and readers look at book signings in a whole new light.

Another aspect I enjoyed as a mother and an author is the way Tess feels torn between promoting her work and keeping up with her parenting responsibilities. I think writers who are parents often experience that tug-of-war between worlds, and Hank Phillippi Ryan does a stellar job of showing us just how torn Tess is between wanting her book to succeed and still being there for her family. 

This list wouldn’t be complete without a story about a journalist in peril.

Reporter Camille Preaker returns to her hometown to cover the murder of teen girls after she’s been through a tough time herself. As she covers the story and meets some interesting characters, she begins piecing things together, never realizing how close she is to the true danger. 

Camille has had a rough past, which colors her worldview and her judgment. The book explores how grief and trauma aren’t easily overcome and can’t be shelved simply because time has passed and other people have told you to move on.

I love the notion that sometimes danger is much closer than you think. As readers, we care and worry about Camille as she attempts to not just report on this story but also crack the case.
