This requires the character to be creative, courageous, and if they can, fearless or at least grow into this state of being. This is the exact case in Executive. The arc of the lead character grows from timid to confident over some twists and turns as malicious corporate personalities exert their influence over her. She slowly begins to realize her own power. The blend of real-world high-tech military hardware development provides a steady and interesting backdrop for the increasingly hostile life and death office politics. The story resolves as you’d expect so there is not a great moment of surprise revelation, but it is satisfying.

While many post-apocalyptic tales depict a bleak world where the apocalypse brings out the worst in everyone, my favorite stories—both to read and to write—have always been ones where people hold on to their humanity and band together against the darkness. That’s why I like the ones on this list.
A thrilling post-apocalyptic road trip, this story hits the ground running and never lets up. I loved that the main character was just a regular guy trying to get back to his wife and kids. He’s not prepared for the apocalypse, but his devotion to his family keeps him going.
I also appreciated that the story inter-cut scenes from his wife’s perspective and that she wasn’t a helpless damsel waiting for him to come home and rescue her. Though the characters face challenges, they also show that people are willing to help each other in dark times.

I remember finding an old Edgar Rice Burroughs book on my grandfather’s bookshelf when I was nine years old. I opened the pages and started to read. From that moment, I was hooked on anything that had to do with fictional worlds. Books became my passion, gobbling them up by the hundreds. Also, attending a private Catholic elementary school, I constantly heard the tales of Revelations and the End Times. These two reasons instilled in me a passion for post-apocalyptic books and led me to write in the same genre. I hope you enjoy these books on the list as much as I have!

I got interested in the theme of a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world after hearing years of doomsday predictions, most of which never came true or were far from catastrophic. I wondered what some real threats to our way of life are and in 2015, started writing a novel, Defenders of Holt, about what a dystopian future might look like. After that book, I wanted to write about the events that led up to that dystopian world and settled on a coronal mass ejection (CME) as the apocalyptic event in the Teenage Survivalist series. I did many hours of research to back up my stories to make them as realistic as possible.
This book describes life after an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack on the United States and the collapse of our civilization and even our humanity, as the necessity of a ‘survival of the fittest’ mentality takes over. The story follows Sean and Maria as they use their wits, skills, faith, and personal values to navigate the post-apocalyptic world. I’ve written over 30 novels, mostly fantasy, until meeting a prepper years ago in a tavern with a cold beer and a quiet table.
