It is a nonfiction book that reads like a gripping thriller, in this case, the serial killer H.H. Holmes, who built a three-story building featuring secret rooms, torture chambers, and a crematorium. Check. Chicago leaps off the page. By the end of the book, I was able to envision the massive exposition, its hundreds of temporary buildings, all white colored, interlaced with ponds and canals.

Cronenbergâs 1996 movie adaptation (not the one that won many Oscars and is bad) captures Ballardâs sensual mechanical fetishism and apocalyptic consumerism perfectly. It is a 120-minute-long sex scene in a carousel of mangled metal. It is probably the best adaptation of prose to film I can think of, which is bolstered by the sheer strength of the book itself. Crash (again, not the 2006 one, the car crash sex one) is by far Cronenbergâs horniest feature, and thatâs saying something. Uh. I didnât mean to just talk about the movie. I should probably talk about the book. The book is very good. Iâm deathly afraid of car accidents, and reading about them through Ballardâs dreamy, eroticized lens is a capital-E Experience. In this case, I saw the film before I read the book, and if Iâm going to call myself an honest man, Iâd have to say I enjoyed the film more than the book.
Still, the book struck me as a great read because it embraced and portrayed the extraordinary amount of tension an undercover agent deals with 24/7. I mean, when youâre trying to make an arrest undercover, youâre two people at the same time, but youâd better not mess up and let anyone know you are or itâs game overâand very probably, bang-bang, pal, youâre history.
Add to that being undercover for the FBI and youâre guaranteed a high-stakes conundrum. Which is to say, after reading this book, how could I not have had my bookâs character working undercover for what he and his partner Jonas refer to as âthe Bureauâ?
