Book description
The #1Ā New York Times bestsellerāJess Walterās āabsolute masterpieceā (Richard Russo, Pulitzer Prize-winning author): the story of an almost-love affair that begins on the Italian coast in 1962 and resurfaces fifty years later in contemporary Hollywood.

Why read it?
10 authors picked Beautiful Ruins as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
A wonderful character-driven novel covering many years in the intertwined lives of a half-dozen characters, set in Italy and the U.S., involving a small-time movie actress, a would-be hotel owner in Italy, their quick meeting in 1962 and another decades later. It is therefore a love story but an oddly interrupted one, filled with interesting and frequently hilarious characters (the town's local Communist has a rifle but his wife has used it to stake up her garden plants). It even includes an amusing cameo by Richard Burton, fleeing from his duties while filming CLEOPRATRA and unwittingly putting in motion theā¦
This book includes so many of my favorite things: an inn on the coast of Italy, a young innkeeper with outsized dreams, movie stars, an almost-romance, and a chance for rekindled love.
I clung to every page as the story moved back and forth from the 1960s to the present day, from the set of Cleopatra in Rome to Hollywood backlots. This book is like a vacation full of interesting people you want to know better, the kind of vacation you never want to end.
I read this novel just as I was starting to write in earnest, and beforeā¦
From Katherine's list on novels set in the orbit of Hollywood or Broadway.
There were seven or eight characters, all of whom I had immediate interest and connection with, and I could also quickly imagine how they would eventually intersect. My predictions were all wrong, of course, which made it even more fantastic. Primarily though, Walter's writing is so full, so comprehensive in its settings and moods, I didn't really want this to end. I found myself reabsorbing passages additional times just because of the way the moment was described. Now that makes for a memorable read.
Admittedly, I met Walter at an event in Indianapolis in the fall and was a littleā¦
If you love Beautiful Ruins...
I really enjoyed this novel for several reasons. For one, Jess Walter is a fantastic storyteller. As a history geek, this book gives a fascinatingĀ retro look into an era I otherwise wouldāve ignored: Hollywood during the making of the movieĀ Cleopatra. One of the strengths of fiction is fleshing out aĀ historical personality by putting him or her on stage, giving them voice, emotion, and substance that would be difficult to do in nonfiction.
We meet Richard Burton in all his self-centered, boozy, womanizing splendor, and you canāt help but feel disappointed that you never got to spillā¦

I decided to read this book as research for my latest YA novel. I was curious how Walter managed different timelines. Little did I know how engrossed I would become by this sweeping story of love and old Hollywood?
I was gripped by the characters and surprised by the turns in the plot. I found myself hoping for a very specific ending, which I usually try not to do as thatās the authorās job.
One storyline takes place during the production of the ill-fated Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton epic Cleopatra, and thatās all I needed to keep reading.Ā Yet,ā¦
What draws me to any novel is its characters ā people who are so well-drawn and real-seeming that I can almost imagine sitting down with them over a cup of coffee or glass of wine⦠people who are at the same time sympathetic and flawed⦠people who face challenges I identify with. And if theyāre a bit quirky and eccentric (like me!), so much the better.Ā
Moreover, if any part of those charactersā stories is set at least partly in a place I love (Italy, in this case), Iām easily hooked.Ā Beautiful Ruins covers all those bases!

A friend of mine recommended this book before it became well-knownāand the moment I saw the cover, I knew I had to own it!
Turquoise-blue water, a jagged Italian coastline, pastel-colored buildings set against a cliff, and ohāthat typeface that screams late 1950s/early 1960s! Such enticing visuals! Of course, with such a setup, I might have been expecting too muchābut the story didnāt disappoint me.
Its initial chapters are set in a small, down-on-its-luck hotel in a remote Italian village where a young starlet with a compelling secret comes to stay. Spanning time periods and continents, the novel has anā¦

This novel is a hilarious, intriguing romp, that begins in one of my favorite Italian locationsāthe coast of Liguria. I loved being taken to an imaginary seaside village there in the 1960sābefore the area became crowded with tourists. Waltersā overlapping stories and charactersāfrom impoverished Italian villagers to Rome during its La Dolce Vita heyday, and contemporary Hollywood producers, combined to bring me a love story that totally charmed me.

I have gone back to this story multiple times to laugh and cry on the same page.Ā Itās an expansive novel, which toggles between Hollywood, Rome, and the Cinque Terre with equal ease and sensory description. (I vaguely remember that Ireland and the Northwest are in there as well.Ā Yep, you are swept up and around the globe.)Ā Some of the international cast of characters are hilarious, including an over-the-top star turn by Richard Burton.Ā But, itās not all fun and games.Ā There is a mystery of identity, unfinished business, and unresolved love, with all its joy and heartbreak.Ā Jessā¦

If you love Beautiful Ruins...
Jess Walterās joyfully quirky, bittersweet novel overflows with Hollywood denizens. Itās 1962 in a tiny Italian seaside resort spot near where Elizabeth Taylor (her again?) and Richard Burton are filming Cleopatra. Meanwhile, a blonde starlet scheduled to appear in that ill-fated historical epicĀ turns up pregnant by Burton. While a film studio functionary tries pressuring her into a secret abortion while hiding her away from scandal in a secluded hotel, the hotelās charming young owner falls hopelessly in love. The stage is set for a rueful, time-shifting romance, the aftermath of which unfolds 50 years later. The studioā¦
