Jinesh Bhagdev Author Of happily (n)ever after

From my list on romance books that wreck you and make you ugly cry.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am a reasonably emotional person, and I love strong emotional books. I don’t specifically choose a book because I want to cry. If the book is emotional enough, the body reacts in the form of tears trickling from the eyes. I am a solo book reader and audiobook listener, and I rarely DNF. Some stories stay with you for a long, long time, and sometimes you need to relive that story again. My writing inspiration came from reading more than a hundred books and from the idea that even my ideas can become a novel.

Jinesh Bhagdev Why Jinesh loves this book

This novel portrays grief in such a real and raw way that it stays with you long after you have finished it.

I knew that the book was deeply personal to the author, and that is one of the reasons she is able to portray how to hold yourself in vulnerable situations. I love the books that wreck you and make you ugly cry, and this one surely met those criteria.

Jinesh Bhagdev Why Jinesh loves this book

It was one of my early reading days when I read the book.

I remember reading the book on a train commute to work. And the ending, “She died. I survived. Because I survived, I died every day,” made me cry in the Mumbai Local.

This was more devastating because the author chose to relive the pain he went through to tell the world how much he loved his would-be fiancée. Fate was that they were meant to fall in love, but it had other plans. They were never meant to be together.

Jinesh Bhagdev Why Jinesh loves this book

Memories fade, but the story remains.

I used to write small blogs and poems in my early days, and I loved the poem “If I’d only known” in the book. Being an author myself, I know how good the poem felt. Why it hit hard, giving me goosebumps, I am unable to explain. I loved the characters and how the love story is revealed through the half-burnt diary.

The book, until the end, made me believe that the story was going north, only for me to find out that I was made to look in the wrong direction from the very start.

I did NOT see the plot twist coming.

The dual-timeline story focusing on two different couples in two different locations worked for me. I was a bit skeptical that this would be a sad, not happily-ever-after romance book.

What I loved was that the main characters were incredible, and the love story was a blissful delight and poetic. The author did a commendable job of slowly and gradually building up the backstory. The payoff was 100% worth it.

Book cover of The Widows' Handbook

Elizabeth Zelvin Author Of The Old Lady Shows Her Mettle

From my list on poetry books about real life.

Why am I passionate about this?

A poet for fifty years, I'm proud to say that nobody's ever said, "I didn't understand your poem." The rhythms, images, and words in these books are in plain English. They have feeling and authenticity in common. They make connections. After a reading once, a woman said, "I feel as if I know your whole family." I feel the same about the authors of these books. I'm also interested in my quirky kind of American Jewishness at a time when it's in the news but complicated and misunderstood. Some of the books I chose reflect that.

Elizabeth's book list on poetry books about real life

Elizabeth Zelvin Why Elizabeth loves this book

I loved this anthology of poems for its authenticity and depth of feeling.

It was written by and for widows—of all genders and ages, in all kinds of committed relationships. The anthology demonstrates that there are an infinite number of ways to grieve and survive.

I have given this book as a gift to a number of friends dealing with the loss of a spouse or partner (not necessarily right away!), and they have told me they got a lot of comfort from it.

I think the quality of the poems and how different from every other every voice and experience described is give the book as a whole enormous power. It says, "This is something we all go through, we can each find our own way to grieve, and we are not alone."

What is this book about?

The Widows' Handbook is the first anthology of poems by contemporary widows, many of whom have written their way out of solitude and despair, distilling their strongest feelings into poetry or memoir. This stirring collection celebrates the strategies widows learn and the resources they muster to deal with people, living space, possessions, social life, and especially themselves, once shock has turned to the realization that nothing will ever be the same. As Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg says in her foreword, losing one's partner is "a loss like no other.",

Dwight's book list on weird wonderful books to read in one weekend

Dwight Okita Why Dwight loves this book

If ever there was a book that cast a spell over me, it was Incendiary. The novel is written as a letter to Osama Bin Laden; the letter writer is a woman whose husband and son were killed in a terrorist attack. How male author Chris Cleave manages to speak in the voice of a heartbreakingly traumatized, possibly drunk woman is a true act of ventriloquism. I could imagine the whole thing performed on a black box stage as a monologue and it would be riveting. The heroine's rage is understandable throughout the course of the story. What is surprising is her grace, her sense of humor, even her tenderness toward the man who destroyed her family. At one point she urges him to "stop making boy-shaped holes in the world."

You aren't stupid.
You know there's no such thing as a perfect mother.
Plenty of other books will tell you there is, but this one won't lie to you.

Love means you never break, and it means you're stronger than the things they do to you. I know this is true because I have been through fire, and I am the proof that love survives.

I am not a perfect mother but I will tell you the perfect truth,…

Book cover of I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself

Jennifer Savran Kelly Author Of Endpapers

From my list on queer people on the edge.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’m endlessly fascinated by people’s resilience—how we hold onto life and find meaning in it when everything seems to be falling apart. As a queer and genderqueer author, I especially love to see stories about queer characters in all of their human messiness, characters who aren’t forced to be models of perfection in order to earn readers’ empathy, stories that show us queer people don’t deserve dignity because we’re perfect; we deserve it because we’re human. These five novels have affected me deeply because they don’t shy away from the complexities of grief, love, parenting, trauma, sex, social justice, gender identity, and more.

Jennifer Savran Kelly Why Jennifer loves this book

Against the backdrop of a speculative future in which extra shadows have become the alternative to prison and cameras watch our every move, I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself takes a raw, honest look at grief, family, queerness, and how we survive.

Kris has lost her wife Beau and gained an extra shadow—along with a child who also has an extra shadow. As she navigates her new reality, Kris can either sink deeper into her grief, accepting a life of surveillance and oppression for herself and her kid, or she can choose love and hope.

Crane’s approach to storytelling, open and vulnerable and using small fragments and pop quizzes, allowed me deep into Kris’s heart, and I rooted for her as she forged a life against all odds.

What is this book about?

Dept. of Speculation meets Black Mirror in this lyrical, speculative debut about a queer mother raising her daughter in an unjust surveillance state

In a United States not so unlike our own, the Department of Balance has adopted a radical new form of law enforcement: rather than incarceration, wrongdoers are given a second (and sometimes, third, fourth, and fifth) shadow as a reminder of their crime—and a warning to those they encounter. Within the Department, corruption and prejudice run rampant, giving rise to an underclass of so-called Shadesters who are disenfranchised, publicly shamed, and deprived of civil rights protections.

Susannah Marren Why Susan loves this book

Lisey Landon, the widow of a well-known author, struggles to know who her husband really was.

In real time, which is one of two storylines, Lisey’s sister, Amanda comes to visit and they search magazines and books to find where Lisey is written up. Amanda is troubled, becomes catatonic and Lisey has to care for her. The other storyline is about Scott Landon, his rough past and how he hovers over Lisey’s life, although he is deceased.

What is striking about this novel is the writing and Lisey’s journey. The reader is drawn in at once. When Lisey is able to enter another world called Boo’ya, as her husband did, she is able to save her sister. And by the end of the novel, Lisey herself is set free of her demons. This novel has stayed with me for years.
