Unknown Author Why Gillian loves this book

Eadie Browne is a brilliant character. It covers her life from childhood through her teenage years and on to young adult going through Uni and on to 30. Written in the first person Eadie is as authentic in her narrative as a 7 year old, as she is later on in the book as an 18/19 year old. It is like watching someone grow through childhood, teenage years, young adult to a young woman speeded up in the space of the week it took me to read it.

I enjoyed reading about her time at uni, especially as it was Manchester University which is where I live with areas mentioned that I know well. For the most part set in the late 80's, it's nostalgic, funny, moving, warm hearted and just a beautiful story that had me absolutely captivated.

Book cover of Frank and Red

Unknown Author Why Gillian loves this book

I love books that have a young character interacting with the older generation. In this case Frank is in 60's maybe 70's, I can't remember now and Red is just 6 years old. The writing is brilliant. The authors ability to write a typical 6 year old boy and their simplistic way of thinking is so good, yet he equally portrays Frank as a crotchety old widower, who just wants to keep himself to himself and can do without a 6 year old encroaching on his life.

It brightened every day I was reading it. So funny and yet with a heartwarming, touching theme running through.
