Ever since childhood, I’ve been interested in dark stories, and this led me to writing dark fantasy. To this day, my main inspirations as a writer are Robert E. Howard and Michael Moorcock, both dark fantasists. I think it is only through understanding evil that we can appreciate goodness. As such, I strive to explore the darker parts of my characters’ psyches. I also write a fair deal about racism, which is a socially accepted, even celebrated form of evil. Fiction, because it has so few limits as far as subject matter, is, in my opinion, the best medium to have these conversations. Thank you for reading my list!
I’m reluctant to recommend it because these guys don’t need the money. Four raging narcissists/rapists/drug addicts create a band and proceed to destroy themselves and everything around them. I remember reading it and thinking, “This is the stuff they admit to.”
This book is the very definition of “If they were black, they’d be locked up.” By the point I was reading Vince Neil whine about not being able to tour Japan because he was on probation for drunkenly killing his friend, I realized I was witnessing pure evil. However, evil can be fascinating.

I was drawn to this book because I had always loved Dave Allen's humour.
Through Ms. Soutar's book I learned of his early life in Ireland and how his attendance at strict Catholic schools run by nuns helped to shape his later stand-up comedy routines. Not everybody enjoys Dave's kind of irreverent humour, but for me he was a comedy legend.

I enjoyed Too Close to the Sun by Sara Wheeler. This book focused on the free spirit and playboy that was Denys George Finch Hatton, portrayed by Robert Redford in the film Out of Africa. Denys was from an upper-class family and lived an unconventional life according to his own rules. He is buried in the Ngong Hills, Nairobi, where he loved to spend his time hunting. He is a perfect example of doing what you want to do and not having to worry about money.

It’s not an easy task to convey the carnal intensity and animal abandon of a performer whose default mode has always been unadulterated excess, but Paul Trynka’s masterful study of Iggy Pop hit the motherlode. That book led a few years later to another—my On Elton John—which means I’ve now listened to every Elton song many times and read mountains of Elton interviews (but, no, I’m not planning a third Elton book)!
He writes biographies of pop stars like Paul McCartney and Kate Bush, and I always find them to be well researched and engagingly written. This book on Elton’s rollercoaster life in the 1970s is so rich in detail that I wished Doyle had not stopped at the end of that decade (keep going, Tom!).
A different book with the same title and on the same topic was published the year before (written by David DeCouto). I mention this in case it confuses anyone, as I ended up buying (and reading) both. It is even longer and also very good, so while I’ve given Doyle’s book the nod here, I’m cheating by sneaking its worthy rival in here.

Although His Song stops at the end of the 20th century (when it was written), it is the most carefully researched of the John biographies covering his first half-century.
That makes it invaluable to other writers (me, for example, when writing my own Elton books) and to fans looking to go down biographical and musical rabbit holes.
Rosenthal has also written about ornithologists and jazz musicians, and I always enjoy her writing—certainly careful but far from dull. She has a deft way of sharing her opinions, a kind of gentle persuasion that I found inspiring.
With Elton seemingly unstoppable, some biographers (like Mark Bego and David Buckley) have updated their John books; I rather hope Rosenthal will too!
