I find I am drawn to many different types and genres, but especially military or crime dramas. My favorites include historical references and in my own writing I often place characters in an actual historical event, but with a fictional outcome. Fiction lets me play with matches without real-world consequences. I’ve always been interested in the darker side of human nature, and so dark romance is the place where I can dive in and know it’s pure fantasy. Also, as the real world is plagued with plenty of unsolvable troubles, I love that dark romance guarantees a happy ending. Well, at least for the characters we learn to love!
I love that Luisa sells her beauty to the highest bidder at the start of the book. It’s very rare to see a non-innocent heroine, and so this is tops for me. The icing on the cake, and I’m trying not to send spoilers here, is that Luisa doesn’t really understand that Salvador is and will continue to act like a cartel man.
Luisa realizes very quickly that the deal is a lousy one and that she’s sold herself to a predator. And this is what I love about the book: Luisa doesn’t hang about and wail; she acts, runs into even more trouble, and then learns to play the people she’s in with at their own game. It’s a fun book but very dark.

I'm a writer and a mother. Prior to the birth of my son, I wrote mainly fiction but fiction grounded in reality. As my son grew up, I wanted to write stories for him but as soon as I had written a crocodile story, he had already outgrown it. The years seven until eleven are a magical time for reading and perhaps the age group I enjoy writing for most. As a single, older mother I found the most engaging narratives for myself and my son (who is not a reader although loves being read to) were those that were grounded in reality, particularly the setting and with challenging as well as challenged characters.
Similar to the Mac B books, this is a series about a character who likes to solve crimes/mysteries, and the characters and settings are realistic. Even more wonderful is that the setting is Botswana and it gives much insight into the country and people. I was fortunate enough to be able to read this with my son while travelling with him in Botswana. Perfect.
