This book was basically what I wanted Annihilation to be: creepy, Lovecraftian horror fantasy with characters I actually wanted to root for. I found the magic system extremely unique and believable, and loved the main character's dreams of how to use her power. The historical photos are great and really add to the journal-style narrative. I wasn't expecting to like this book half as much as I did, but it big-time surprised me!

From the moment I read the first page, I knew I would love this book. Its focus on adventure, romance, and whimsy captivated me, all with a cast of queer characters. While it was undeniably queer, that was never the focus of the conflict and was normalized in this fun fantasy world.

It was following characters on a reality TV show and I am a sucker for some good reality TV. It gave a view into the behind the scenes of the filming process and showed that love blossoms in so many different ways. It can be complicated and messy but also beautiful and fulfilling.

I actually read the entire Shades of Magic trilogy last year, but it makes sense to recommend the first book in the series. I've come to really appreciate V.E. Schwab for her diverse tales, and this trilogy hit the mark for me. The characters were interesting and engaging, and the relationships between them complex. The magic system and alternate Londons were extremely well-crafted. The pacing, story progression, and character development was all strong, and it made for an extremely satisfying, short fantasy series. I highly recommend it if you are looking to break up a large epic with a short, punchy series with satisfying world-building and character development.

I’m a huge fan of queer re-tellings (as you can probably sense from this list) as well as lush, detailed historical fiction, and C.B. Lee delivers both in this vivid, adrenaline-spiking adventure. My favorite thing about this story is how Lee takes the bones of Treasure Island and reanimates them, bringing a new perspective to a classic by shifting the focus from traditional Western pirate narratives. I can’t help it, I am an absolute sucker for a girl dressing up as a boy. It’s a classic trope in lesbian fiction, and while it’s reminiscent of trans masculine narratives, it’s also a fantastical reflection of butch/femme dynamics, and these two things can co-exist in the literary world. This book is solid queer joy, filled with the sweetest and most loveable characters. While the book is short and written in the hi-lo style, it's still filled with true emotion and a wonderful message.
I read this book in a single sitting in an afternoon and loved it so much that I went right back to page one and read it again. Sometimes, books should simply be written as an example to others of how they should act. If the whole world were as caring and sweet as these two boys and their families, it would be a much happier and more accepting place.
