70 Books Like How to Be Your Own Best Friend

I related to Atticus Finch.

He was the dad everyone wished they had. He was also a lot like my old high school football coach. There is authentic love and warmth when he and Scout are together. And there is honesty and spine when Atticus is in the courtroom, defending those who have been wrongly accused.

This beloved book has inspired generations of readers around the world. It is a morality tale about a rough and imperfect country, written in a way that has inspired idealists to stay the course in our fight for justice. We may be flawed, but we can still be strong.

Yes, this book stuck with me. I had it sitting there for a year and turned to it after a terrible breakup. Many of the quotes I read were so meaningful that I began my own book of quotes that I copied down so I could return to them when I needed healing or to be reminded of certain understandings that struck home.

One that I really liked was when he said you shouldn't blame anyone else for their actions. Instead, they see things as follows: "Their soul required them to act that way." It takes away blame and makes you think of the soul, its development, the unfolding of the soul, and its purpose and mystery.

I think it takes away the feeling of ownership of another person. No one owns anyone else. In that sense, allowing and understanding they are free is very free. In that thinking, no… show more.

It was very exciting. The book is about coincidences/synchronicities and being guided by signs, visions, and feelings. I was already caught up in a spiritual path when this book appeared, and it was like a whirlwind time for me. I was led into many different studies, eventually returning to Christianity. This book was close to the beginning of a journey that began 30 years ago. 

This book, though, opened my eyes to the connection between a higher intelligence and yourself. Its magnificent guidance led me, which I still rely on today. I swear that that ability has saved me daily by following Christ. I learned that the world was very full, alive, exciting, and not mundane.

I remember realizing that things were happening for a reason, and then I read in the prologue that he said: "that our falls were necessary and of divine origin." Yes! I knew it!

This was the third book that I was sure I was led to at the beginning of my spiritual journey. It was enlightening, and I began realizing that God was at work in my life. 

I remember him speaking about our eyes pointing the wrong way. They have to turn and look inward. I like that philosophy of self-improvement and self-understanding. It's not really about self-criticism but through greater understanding and acceptance, which allows for self-love and change. 

I feel at my core that peeling layers of an onion is a desire for love. I suspect this is the case for most of us.

The large family dynamic immediately pulled me into this story about family, love, and learning to let go of expectations.

As someone who wishes I had a large family, adores love, and needs help going with the flow, it was a perfect fit. The sibling camaraderie and bickering, and how they all talk in quick succession and sometimes over each other, gives a depth and reality to the interactions. I loved that part best. 

When I was writing my first mystery series, I knew very little about the history of the lesbian detective novel. Because I wanted to work within the genre’s boundaries, I spent almost as much time researching it as writing. With the 2022 publication of The Lesbian Detective Novel, Megan Casey has made this task way easier for future lesbian mystery authors. She lists over 1,000 titles along with their creators and adds a few pertinent notes about each book or series. When you finish my first four picks and are looking for other lesbian mysteries to enjoy, this is the book to have by your bedside. I certainly have it beside mine.

This is a less sophisticated mystery than the other four but doesn’t suffer for that reason.

Mickie Mckinney is a schoolboy detective and the setting is a school. I like the conceit that his office is in a cupboard under the stairs. The crimes are not sophisticated, which will suit some readers, and the humour is good.

You might know Hugh Laurie as the actor who played Dr. Gregory House in House, though he’s been great in lots of other stuff, including playing Bertie Wooster in Jeeves and Wooster. He’s also a hell of a writer. The Gun Seller has the pacing of a spy novel and the sentences you might expect if P.G. Wodehouse and Raymond Chandler went into that gene-combining teleportation portal from The Fly and emerged as P.G. Chandlerhouse. Sample sentence: “But Rayner was also three inches taller than me, four stones heavier, and at least eight however-you-measure-violence units more violent.”

The foundation of my Vision Training for Life leadership workshops is maintaining a wide, open lens on life so that you can take in as many experiences as possible. But one question I used to struggle with was, why do some experiences, even those that seem inconsequential at the time, have such an outsized impact?

The Heath brothers answered the question for me, and then some, through their combination of data-driven research and rich storytelling. This book imparts so many lessons, including how crucial first impressions are for predicting successful outcomes. That insight alone has helped spark so much human connection for me. The book is filled with many more nuggets that promise to improve your life.

Let’s talk about memorable beginnings and I am talking about the kind that will keep you awake at night. Sanford is gritty and he really pushes the edge with his villains. On that note, he really pushes the edge with his protagonists as well, because Lucas Davenport is one of my favorite cops. Take one very smart (but seriously disturbed villain) and one very smart (but intense cop) and pit them against each other.

As Lucas weaves through the unfathomable workings of the brain of someone who is truly unhinged, he encounters an unholy marriage of two killers who operate on a separate plane yet have a common goal and the result is chilling to say the least.

The Prey novels are never for the faint of heart, but always fast-paced and well-written, suspense being the end game each time.
