100 Books Like God and Money

Blessed provides a comprehensive look into why church is what it is in America today. Her approachable writing style and personal anecdotes keep the reader enthralled in a topic that could easily be presented in a dry, academic way. I’m obsessed with this false idea of a prosperity gospel and why so many people still believe it. If you have questions about why church looks more like a show today than a worship service, this book is for you. 

The book helped to validate my concerns about the prosperity gospel movement but also encouraged me to not condemn those who are in it, but to seek understanding and even relationships with those that believe differently than I do. The background and research Bowler provides were a major contributor to my book and helped lay the groundwork for the questions I pose.

This book invites questioning very established Christian ideas that many are afraid to bring up. On the opposite end, it provides a helpful resource to those looking to have tough conversations with friends about their faith. I loved this book because it helped me wrestle with my own questions about my faith and provide tools for helpful discourse with friends and family. Not exactly a light read, but immensely important.

This book was perspective shifting for me because it brings together four experts on the bible and contrasts their very different views on one of the most important topics of our faith, eternity. As someone that grew up never thinking critically about hell, this book made me realize that there were still a lot of elements of my faith that I needed to investigate.

This was another foundational book for the network I created, PreachersNSneakers, and seemed to validate some of the questions I already had about Christianity. This book is packed with statistics and other realities about how much poverty and suffering there is in the world compared to the small subset of Western Christians that live with relative wealth. This book helps wrestle with the idea that a few get to flourish while masses live in poverty and how we as Christians should live our lives knowing that fact. This book is challenging in the best way and is a must-read for those who have questions about the relationship between faith and money.

When Katie and I married, we had completely different views on finances. In particular, I wanted to get out of debt and Katie seemed like she wanted to keep spending money regardless of how much we had. Someone gave us this book as a wedding gift and Katie read it on our honeymoon. By the time we came home her view was completely changed.

It’s probably the highest recommendation I can give this book. There’s a reason it is the top-selling financial book of all time. I have read it and recommended it to others. The book has mass appeal because it’s not strictly Christian.

Get-rich-quick schemes are avoided in place of a simple and straightforward approach. The program, Financial Peace University, has been used in churches and secular organizations. The major focus is the elimination of debt. The accompanying radio show, podcasts, and supplemental material also have this focus.

Larry Burkett founded Crown Financial Ministries, had an accompanying radio show, and wrote many financial books. I am thankful for Mr. Burkett and all of his contributions to God’s kingdom. His program has been used by many individuals and churches and is the closest rival to Dave Ramsey’s program.

He has many wonderful books I could have chosen, but I stuck with this one because of the foundation in Scripture. As the subtitle communicates, it is “An in-depth Bible study on personal finances.” I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how to manage their finances according to biblical principles.

Ms. Pegue is a speaker and television host on TBN. She made a splash in 2005 with her book, 30 Days to Taming Your Tongue, which she then capitalized on by publishing a “30 Day Series.” This book was second in the series.

We want authors to have credibility, and Debra was an accountant for many years and a certified behavioral consultant. This has helped her understand not just finances but people’s behaviors. She brings those together in this book to help people manage their finances well.

I have been a fan of Mr. Alcorn for years, not just as an author and pastor but as a Christian. He has applied his own financial teaching and an incredible way. When he was sued for picketing at an abortion clinic he didn’t want to because he knew the proceeds would go toward abortionists. This caused him to learn to live on very little.

In this book, he provides an eternal view of our temporary wealth and possessions. The primary focus, spread over the course of the book, can be boiled down to one point: the heavenly perspective we should have will help us be good earthly stewards. In Mr. Alcorn’s own words, the book is “thoroughly researched…a biblical comprehensive view,” and I completely agree that it is.

This was probably the most easily digestible book on investing that I’ve ever read. To me, the most difficult part of investing is simply getting over the fear of doing it, and Morgan Housel gives genuine motivation for overcoming that fear.

The chapters are purposefully short, which allowed me to absorb the main takeaways without getting too in the weeds on details (a necessary downside of a lot of nonfiction). I loved that it included very clear examples of how our brains work against us when it comes to our finances, as well as clear advice on how to counteract that.

I found many pearls of wisdom between the covers of this book and discovered new ideas and things to work on after each reading.

Though the book is written by a Jewish Rabbi, it’s not a religious book. Lapin is spot on with his 10 Commandments on how to prosper. It’s a wealth of ideas on how to enrich your life and your business.
