I’m an avid reader by day and a passionate writer by night. I found myself writing the stories I couldn’t seem to find. This topic is one I know from first-hand experience. I’ve dealt with drug abuse and domestic abuse in my family from a young age and although painful to speak about it’s helped shape my career and help my readers find healing through my characters. I want my readers to be pulled in by a work of fiction while still having the knowledge that for me, it wasn’t. Abuse comes in all forms, shapes, and sizes, and I’ve realized it’s not forever. Even in the worst storms, the sun will always shine.
I chose this title because it’s the first story that made me fall in love with this genre. There is a deep sense of authenticity stemming from the reality of finding love after abuse. It helps the reader understand the true emotions of someone navigating through life after years of childhood abuse and trauma. Afton’s writing creates a beautiful story from beginning to end, while bringing the reader on an emotional roller coaster at the same time. This story left an impact on my heart and greatly influenced my writing as an author.
The saying "You got handed the short end of the stick" didn't even apply, I'd never even seen the stick, let alone the short end. Ashton Becker has lived her entire life being trapped in a nightmare she can't wake up from. For as long as she can remember her parents have abused her both physically and mentally. She knows there has to be more to life than this and she finds it when she gets accepted to boarding school hundreds of miles away from everything she has ever known. She jumps at the opportunity to finally get out? Charlie…
The Victorian mansion, Evenmere, is the mechanism that runs the universe.

To say I am still obsessed with this book to this day would be an understatement. I fell in love with this story from the very first page. It’s one of my most recommended books, and I can only hope other readers enjoy and connect with it as much as I do. It’s a story that can be read multiple times and never tire of. Reading this story lit a fire within me as a reader and an author with a thirst to create and read more stories alike. Amber and Liam have a love I’ve never been able to find in any other books I’ve read before.
Amber Walker and her older brother, Jake, have an abusive father. One night her brother's best friend, Liam, sees her crying and climbs through her bedroom window to comfort her. That one action sparks a love/hate relationship that spans over the next eight years. Liam is now a confident, flirty player who has never had a girlfriend before. Amber is still emotionally scarred from the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father. Together they make an unlikely pair. Their relationship has always been a rocky one, but what happens when Amber starts to view her brother's best friend…

I fell in love with K. Webster as an author before I met Enzo, but because of that love I was able to find a story that hit every emotion from beginning to end. This was my first read that introduced me to the idea of an age gap and forbidden romance. It has all the best qualities I hope to find in a story and so much more. I would read anything K. Webster publishes, but Enzo holds a place in my heart always. It took a while for Enzo to get over the fact that his relationship with Jenna was not traditional in any way compared to the social norm, and I love a Hero that struggles to comprehend the amount of love and adoration they actually have for the Heroine.
From USA Today Bestselling Author K Webster, comes a new forbidden romance standalone novel!Jenna’s grown up in the system.Forced to be tough, wary, and hard. She’s only been able to count on herself. Until Enzo. He’s much older and responsible for looking after her. What should be a job to him, evolves into much more.Late night phone calls. Lingering touches. A forbidden fire that burns brighter each day.Everything about him exudes strength. His will to protect her is more than she could ever ask for.Sadly, though, even heroes have their limitations. But she doesn’t need a hero. She just needs him.

When I first started reading I stumbled into this story about loss, love, and longing. I was amazed how the characters were able to survive through their ordeals and yet come out stronger with love and happiness on the other side. The emotion is real, and the imagery of a broken, yet strong heroin is phenomenal. I read this story more than five years ago but it’s one of the first I recommend to anyone looking for an exceptional storyline. Lola and Jack met under the most unfortunate circumstances, but together they manage to get through everything thrown against them.
This is Lola's story. She has a secret no one can know. Once a safe haven, her home has turned into a prison, and she fears if she doesn't somehow escape, she will lose herself completely. She finds her escape in Jack; a troubled young man with a cynical smile and eyes that see all Lola tries to hide. But even Jack can't save her from the evil at home.
Everyone wants to find romance. Some of us find it within the pages—or more than once. I also think romance gets a bad rap, but I for one love to fall in love repeatedly. It doesn’t matter if they’re fictional because when you read a story; you get lost in their world, as though you’re their friend, too. That is what I strive for when I write my characters. I write them as someone you could go out for a drink with and just have a good time. However, most of my characters experience life or death situations, but that just makes them stronger in the end, especially when I base them on my real-life experiences like in Tattooed Dots.
Bared Souls is a unique story with interesting characters and a beautiful and tragic love story that pulls on your emotions and heartstrings. It makes you see love in a different way and takes on a topic that is hard to overcome for some. Even leading to death. Bared Souls sucks you in and will have you flipping the pages until the very end.
Alma Weber He told me that he’d destroy me. I knew he wasn’t lying, and I loved him anyway. I believed in love—in him. I just wasn’t prepared to carry the weight of his demons. I wanted forever with him, but life showed me love was temporary, and forever was a dream. Despite everything that happened, even now, I wouldn’t change any of it. For a love to have the capacity to destroy you, it has to be extraordinarily powerful—and that kind of love is impossible to walk away from. Leo Harding I warned her that I’d ruin her. I…

In this groundbreaking relationship book, positive emotions expert Barbara L. Fredrickson gives us an entirely new way of understanding love and appreciating its benefits.
“A radically new conception of love.”—The Atlantic
Even more than happiness and optimism, love holds the key to improving our mental and physical health as well as lengthening our lives. Using research from her own lab, Barbara L. Fredrickson redefines love not as a stable behemoth, but as micro-moments of connection between people—even strangers. She demonstrates that our capacity for experiencing love can be measured and strengthened in ways that improve our health and longevity. Finally,…

My name is Jess, and I'm a writer, designer, and illustrator based in South Yorkshire, UK. I have always found navigating my feelings and emotions tricky, even from a very young age. Labeled as 'too sensitive,' I would often find that I felt and reacted to things more deeply than others did. In my mid 20s I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety and began going to therapy, this is where I leant a wealth of things about myself and began to find ways to cope and better deal with how I travelled through life.
Another book that tackles the issues of feeling sad but makes it accessible for 2-5 year olds. I have read this countless times with my 3-year-old daughter, and she absolutely loves it. A wonderful book with superb illustrations that opens a door to conversations around emotions with little ones and allows them to understand that sometimes we do and will feel sad—and that’s okay!
We love this book so much that now, when my daughter is feeling sad, we say she’s a gloomy baboony and it helps her feel validated and safe while sitting in her sadness.
Having spent most of my life in the Midwest, I know a little (or a lot) about growing up in a small-town environment. When I was younger, I was annoyed by all the things I now find charming about this genre of romance books. The nosy neighbor, the know-it-all jock, the downtrodden wallflower? Stereotypical but oh-so-real. I have written several series set in small towns and have come to love them all. It’s now my go-to genre when I want to sit and relax.
I adore Karice Bolton’s ability to weave romance and women’s fiction—a genre focused on telling the woman’s story.
I loved that these characters are mature and well-developed and found this to be a comfortable world for me to walk into. The emotions run high in this one, and it’s absolutely perfect. I liked the balance of character development mixed with romance.
The theme of this list is so important to me as an independently published author. Ever since I was about 14 years old I knew I wanted to tell stories, and my way, so even then I was looking into indie publishing. The idea of offering my books up to the traditional publishing chopping block, to be edited and mulled into what’s most marketable, scared me so much! I didn’t want to tell my stories another person’s way. So here we are, and I’m giving you guys a list of indie recommendations whose authors feel very much the same way. We just want to tell our stories. And have control over how that’s done. ;)
If you like your fantasy a little darker, with more longing than spice (but still a little spice too ;) ) then this might be the book for you. Of Divine Blood features a main character who embraces her femininity and emotions and eventually manages to turn them into a fiery rage that leads her to take revenge on her abusers. It’s pretty glorious. And Corvina’s love interest is pretty amazing too; empowering without being dominating, and he’s the perfect mix of sweet and protective. Check the trigger warnings, then give her a read!
The Divine Gods may have been Corvina's patrons but she would tear them down from their thrones and ascend to claim their places - to claim her place - both in this world and the heavens above. For none would own her body again.
All her life she spent caged like an animal. The shackles the Elder Priest cast over her held her prisoner to the chantry. She had once been devoted to her lessons, to harnessing each of the seven magics the Divine had bestowed upon her. She had once loved…

I’ve been fascinated by time travel and speculative stories since I was a child. I grew up with The Tomorrow People and then later was captivated by Sapphire and Steel. While I love reading most genres and have a book blog and book column in the local press, I feel speculative fiction has just that little extra edge. It answers that clichéd questionwhat if? And transports you into magical visions of slightly different worlds. I hope you enjoy the books on this list as much as I have. And perhaps, one day, The Storytellers might appear on someone else’s. What a joy that would be!
This book is heartbreaking and magical. I thought at first it was a romance novel, but a speculative twist took me by surprise. I became enthralled in those chapters not wanting to leave them. Not quite believing the brilliance of the premise. My daughter had gone through a very similar situation, so every emotion felt raw, and I completely engaged with Anna’s dilemma. How could she choose what to do? I tentatively told my daughter about it and after reading it, she agreed it was amazing too. The ending, which brought me to tears, is hopeful and poignant. It is such a unique story, but I won’t spoil it by mentioning the theme portrayed in it.
From the USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author comes an emotional romance that is "beautifully written and plotted" (Candis).
This is not a typical love story, but it's our love story.
When Anna arrives in a Spanish beach town for a much-needed escape from real life, she isn’t looking for love. Until Adam sweeps her off her feet. There’s no denying their connection, and what begins as a beautiful romance soon becomes a vow to love each other . . . forever.
Years later, cracks have appeared in their marriage. In an attempt to rekindle their fire, they…
