100 Books Like Face It

Patti Smith’s book beautifully chronicles her intense and formative friendship with the groundbreaking artist Robert Mapplethorpe as they navigated the vibrant and often gritty art scene of late 1960s and 1970s New York City.

Theirs wasn’t a fairytale romance, but a complex, evolving bond between two flawed yet undeniably brilliant creatives. Reading about their struggles, their artistic pursuits within the legendary Chelsea Hotel, and the wider New York City scene evoked a strong sense of nostalgia for me, a time and place I've always found artistically inspiring.

The exploration of their creative partnership, the push and pull between them as individuals finding their artistic voices, is something I’ve often yearned for but haven’t quite experienced in such a profound way.

This book is a powerful and often heartbreakingly honest memoir from an artist who was frequently misunderstood throughout her career.

Before her untimely passing, Sinéad offered her own perspective on her life, her activism, and the numerous challenges she faced within the music industry and in her personal life.

One of the most compelling parts of the book for me was understanding how Sinéad saw herself and the fallout from the infamous Saturday Night Live incident, where she tore up a photo of the Pope. This act significantly impacted her career. Her account of Prince, who penned one of her biggest hits, is also quite memorable, though not particularly flattering to him.

Ultimately, it's a sad story of a fiercely independent and deeply emotional individual who often seemed unfairly castigated, and I truly appreciated her raw energy and unfiltered perspective in the book. Her loss is a significant one.

This book shares the author's intimate experiences managing the band Nirvana during their meteoric and transformative rise to global fame.

Having been a journalist before transitioning into management, Danny offers a poignant and complex portrait of a troubled genius, delving into Kurt’s artistic brilliance, his internal struggles, and the tragic events that ultimately unfolded. Having worked in the music industry for decades myself, I knew some of the people within Danny’s management company and witnessed much of this era from an insider's perspective.

While Danny’s account is undoubtedly shaped by his personal experiences, it provides valuable insight into the complex circumstances surrounding Nirvana. It's not presented as a definitive truth, but rather as a thoughtful and honest tribute and opinion from someone who was closely involved. I found his straightforward approach refreshing.

This is a deeply personal story from a friend who witnessed firsthand Tom Petty’s journey from being nearly discarded by his record label to achieving legendary status, a testament to unwavering belief and sheer persistence.

Having known Jon for years as a dedicated community builder with an exceptional ability to bring people together, it came as no surprise to me that his account of discovering and championing Tom Petty's music to a massive American audience is such a compelling and well-told story.

Jon’s authenticity and trustworthiness shine through, and his narrative feels like a genuine recounting of a pivotal moment in music history, coming from someone who was there and believed from the start, rather than someone trying to capitalize on Tom’s fame posthumously.

Not many books are written about bands that labor in the trenches for over thirty years with little success. The Fleshtones formed in New York City in the mid 1970s, one of many new wave/punk bands seeking to fulfill their rock-‘n’-roll dream. Today, they are still looking to achieve that dream. Since 1982, they have released over 20 albums, none achieving commercial success. With just the right combination of humor and seriousness (like The Fleshtones themselves), Sweat documents the band’s bad luck, bad management, bad record contracts, bad decisions, and self-destructive behaviors. Always on the brink of breaking through, “The Fleshtones,” as lead-signer Peter Zaremba put it, “have stared in the face of success and laughed.”

This book gave me a drive. Goodman’s account of the Strokes’ debaucherous rise in 9/11-era New York City ignited my passion for oral history and to tell the story of the music that made me. Downtown cool kid garage rock shaped popular culture immensely, but so did My Chemical Romance and their cohort (even more so, I’d argue). Up to this point (MMITB was published in 2017), 2000s emo was frequently misconstrued by those too old to have understood its impact or left out of the conversation entirely.

As I conducted interviews for my book, I challenged my own hypotheses (and personal biases) about these two scenes. I learned they intermingled more than I thought. I talked to Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz about DJing the ultra-hip downtown party Misshapes and My Chemical Romance’s Mikey Way about trying to catch a glimpse of Madonna at the same place.

Frank Mastropolo gives ample justification for why Fillmore East was hailed as The Church of Rock ’n’ Roll in his book, Fillmore East: The Venue That Changed Rock Music Forever. The text brims with photographs, memorabilia, and first-hand accounts of the most legendary shows to occur at the legendary East Village (NYC) locale.

A controversial book amongst Deadheads as Selvin takes a critical and insightful look at the machinations of the post-Garcia band and things don’t always come up smelling roses. Selvin’s not a card-carrying member of the Dead Fanclub – but he can write superbly and has dug very deep and uncovered all sorts of fascinating maneuvering and powerplays between the key participants in the band. It’s not always pretty but it’s certainly fascinating. If you don’t want to know then maybe look away.

This is such a great book! I loved it even more than the author's first (which was also very good). Though be warned you might get some side eyes if you read this one on the actual beach as it will have you laughing out loud one minute and swallowing back tears the next. I adore it when books are able to give me a wide range of emotions. This one might be a little heavier than the other books on my list, but the author does a fantastic job balancing humor and heartbreak. I recommend this book to those who love romance mixed with laughter and lots of heart.

This book takes place in Baltimore, which always fascinates me (I lived there for a couple of decades).

There’s a fan (a father, who’s a music teacher), a kid (his son, who wants his dad to be happy), and a female rockstar (the drummer from the music teacher’s favorite band) who’s been in hiding for decades. Of course, they all come together (what more could you want?!).

In the end, this is the sweetest love story I’ve read in years.
