Tokyo, Form and Spirit was the catalogue for an exhibition at the Walker Center in 1986 with contributions of the most important Japanese urban writers of the 1990s: Henry Smith, Kenneth Frampton, Donald Richie, Marc Treib, Chris Fawcett to name but a few. Tokyo by Jinnai Hidenobu was
influential for me both as a source of information about the history of Tokyo and for its methodology of research. The author discovers the city via walking
and traveling across its water routes, an experiential methodology which he
first developed in his study of Venice. With the assistance of visuals, both
historical and newly drawn based on his field observations, Jinnai explores
modern-day Tokyo. His starting point is that Tokyo seems an anomaly when
compared with other world cities in its lack of historical structures which is
attributed to a series of wars and disasters that radically transformed the
city’s physical environment.
The impressive discovery of this inquiry
however is that despite the perceived newness of Tokyo, the spirit of Edo
(Tokyo’s name during the Tokugawa period, 1600-1868) has not vanished in

I was extremely lucky to conduct
my PhD research on Tokaido road in the 1990s. Books by scholars of Japanese Studies like Marily Ivy were
extremely influential and opened my eyes to aspects that would not have been
visible to me otherwise.
The Discourses of the Vanishing was
one such book that dispelled deeply rooted myths of Japan, especially
the belief that Japan is a fully modernized country, that Japanese society is
monolithic, and that Japan’s most noteworthy locales are its highly urbanized
areas. What brought me to the book was Ivy’s examination of the Exotic Japan
campaign of Japan’s railways in the late 1980s. This campaign was woven with
powerful notions of furusato (nostalgia for one’s native place), neo-Japonesque
exoticism, and other imaginary references of post-bubble Japan meant to appeal
to women as new targets of Japan’s consumption campaigns.

Laura Nenzi’s book discusses the
role of travel in the formation of identity, using primary sources that derive from travel
accounts of Edo Japan. Nenzi looks at personal travel diaries and brings an
anthropological view on the subject seeing travel as a self-discovery process,
while also paying attention to differences in the experience of the literati
travelers and the less educated commoners for whom, with the rise of the market
economy, the roads and their pleasures became more accessible. This brings to
life the changes in the earlier literati tradition of the meisho (famous
places) with the rise of commodification of both products (meibutsu) and
religious practices.

Between 2004 and 2020, I made twenty-five road trips around Japan’s four main islands, covering over thirty thousand miles, mainly in a rental car with my partner Karen. We traced the 1689 journey of the poet Bashō to northeastern Honshū and searched for famous places depicted in woodblock prints of nineteenth-century artist Utamaro Hiroshige. My recommendations include the books I consulted to explore roads less traveled and sites less frequented to learn about the literature, history, and culture of our ancestral homeland. The delightful scenes in Hiroshige’s nineteenth-century woodblock print series known as “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō” beckon travelers to journey along the Tōkaidō, Japan’s most famous Edo Period road. The road connected Kyōto, the ancient Imperial capital, to Edo (Tōkyō), where the shogun’s castle was located. Delord, a French artist, makes the journey on a motor scooter. His book provides historical notes, personal experiences, and sketches and watercolors of the road’s fifty-three stations, or post towns where travelers could find lodging, porters, and packhorses. Delord’s contemporary images of modern asphalted highways and urban landscapes document how the road and towns have changed. But one can still recognize the scenes depicted in Hiroshige’s prints and find remnants of the old road.

I am not the type of person who likes to say “you are wrong” in fact I am the type of person who likes to say “let us add this to the whole story”. When you picture Japan you do not picture: slavery, snake dancers, or even samurai removing their shoes outdoors in a gesture of politeness to a superior, you do not imagine Italian Jesuits, western traders, pirates, and Chinese samurai, but they are all a part of actual samurai life. It is my task to add those lost items to our understanding of Japan and the samurai, but of course, in addition to this, I have to correct the story of the ninja, simply because it is a false one. The shinobi as they should be known were disfigured in the 20th century and I want to reveal their true face.
At the moment Yasuke - the Black Samurai is very prominent in the samurai enthusiast community, and rightly so, he was an African samurai who made his way up the ranks. However, not much is known about his story, so while it is fascinating, there is too little documentation to delve further. This is not the case with William Adams, a Londoner who made his way to Japan, who not only became a samurai but then also became a banner-man (Hatamoto) and leader of a small state. We have so much historical documentation about him and his story is captivating.
While he only arrived at the end of the wars, he was still around at one of the most important times of Japanese history. He never made it back home, but this was one Englishman who made his mark on Japanese culture. Something I hope to do.

I have always liked antiheroes and characters that are in some way doomed. To me, there’s something romantic about them. And over time I have come to replace the fictional protagonists of noir and horror with antiheroes from real life. With miserable authors who wrote about their own lives, where instead of gangsters or monsters, they waged battle against themselves, against their own demons and despair. Books like these have kept me company during some of the darkest periods of my life, and their unflinching honesty has inspired me to become a writer. Perhaps they can do the same for you.

Whilst I cannot say that I’ve necessarily gone through some of the extreme experiences of its protagonist, I can nevertheless say that I’ve experienced a very similar sense of alienation, which has at times made me feel less than human, making this one of the most relatable books that I have ever read.
