Bashō’s poetic narrative of a journey he made in 1689 to northeastern Honshū is the most famous travelogue in Japanese literature. As a college student in 1970, I read a translation and imagined someday following the path of his journey to see what he saw. Over three decades later, I had the time, resources, and knowledge to make several road trips to do just that. After reading various translations, I found Sato’s the most helpful in understanding why Bashō visited the places he did and what his narrative and poems were about. As we drove along Bashō’s roads, Sato’s annotated text provided insights into the history and culture of Japan and its Tōhoku region.
Matsuo Basho (1644-94) is considered Japan's greatest haiku poet. Narrow Road to the Interior (Oku no Hosomichi) is his masterpiece. Wilson describes his walking journey along the ancient Kiso Road through the Kiso Valley and the stops he made in the eleven post towns along the road. Today, some of the towns, like Narai, Tsumago, and Magome, are popular tourist destinations because they have maintained something of the look and character of the Edo Period, but in Wilson’s narrative, even the lesser known towns have something interesting to offer. Walker describes personal experiences with local people he met in the inns where he stayed and provides historical and literary backgrounds that add depth to his journey. The Kisoji, which runs through the Kiso Valley in the Japanese Alps, has been in use since at least 701 C.E. Jansen’s book reproduces woodblock prints from Hiroshige’sCollection of Prints of Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces(1853–1856), which features a print of a famous place from each of the sixty-eight provinces of Old Japan, plus a print of Edo. When I looked through the prints in 2018, some of the places, were familiar to me; others, I had never heard of. I realized we had visited about a third of the places, so I set out to see the rest. The sites, of course, look different from the prints, but navigating backroads to visit them was always interesting. Among the most memorable places we visited were Hōrai Temple, Monkey Bridge, Yōrō Waterfall, Mt. Haruna Shrine, Kanegasaka, Waterfall Bay, Gōkei Gorge, Gokansho, and the Kannon Hall at Abuto.
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) designed a series of 70 landscapes depicting the provinces of Japan between 1854 and 1856. It was the first of a number of sets from the highly productive years of his later life. Trede’s book reproduces the woodblock prints from Hiroshige’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. When I first visited Tōkyō I felt overwhelmed by the city’s enormous size and complexity. Where to go and what to see? This collection of prints provided me with a way to begin exploring the many districts and neighborhoods of the city. While some of the places featured in the prints are well-known and recognizable today, others aren’t. Visiting the sites depicted, I could see how different modern Tōkyō was from nineteenth-century Edo, which led me to research the history of Tōkyō and how and why it has changed so much in the two centuries since Hiroshige produced his prints.

In 1995, I was invited to the People’s Republic of China to direct a play at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. It was the first Canadian play to be produced in China. I am an architect from Greece who
traveled to Japan in the 1990s as an exchange student. Visiting Japan in the
early 1990s was a transformative experience. It led me to a career at
the intersection of Japanese studies and spatial inquiry and expanded my
architectural professional background. I did my PhD on the
Tokaido road and published it as a book in 2004. Since then I have written several other books on subjects
that vary from the Olympic Games to social movements. In the last 16 years, I've taught at Parsons School of Design in New York where I am a professor of
architecture and urbanism. My current project is researching the role of space
and design in prefigurative political movements.
Vaporis’ Breaking Barriers gave me the background knowledge to understand how developed the
system of travel was in Edo Japan. Both in relation to the infrastructure and
the regulations imposed by the Bakufu under the Tokugawa regime. I was
particularly impressed to learn about the sankin kotai, which is the travel expeditions
of the regional lords (the daimyo) for their mandatory alternate residency in
Tokyo, and the different protocols and checks across the roads.
Despite the
harsh laws of the Tokugawa’s system of roads, barriers, relays, and permits, I
was surprised to discover the social reality of the roads and how travelers
managed to overcome the regulations and escape from social restrictions. I also
enjoyed the multiplicity of sources that Vaporis is using to describe the
culture of the road beyond the official records: from diaries and literary
sources to woodblock prints.
Travel in Tokugawa Japan was officially controlled by bakufu and domainal authorities via an elaborate system of barriers, or sekisho, and travel permits; commoners, however, found ways to circumvent these barriers, frequently ignoring the laws designed to control their mobility. In this study, Constantine Vaporis challenges the notion that this system of travel regulations prevented widespread travel, maintaining instead that a "culture of movement" in Japan developed in the Tokugawa era.

My writing career has been in middle grade and YA, but as a reader I’m always trying to branch out. When I was a kid, literature opened the door to the whole world, and as an adult, I’m still exploring. When I read work in translation I can feel the literary connection to other writers and thinkers and simultaneously appreciate the differences that arise through geographic and cultural heritage. Translated from Japanese, this 182-page novel originally published in 1951 is perhaps a little long to be included as a short novel, and a little old to be considered contemporary . . . but it’s a personal favorite! Both a novel and a piece of journalism, Master describes the final match of a man widely considered to be his generation’s greatest go player. Interwoven into this narrative/character study are arresting details about the game and those who have played it over the centuries. It reads so quickly, you’ll think it was only 100 pages.

I am not the type of person who likes to say “you are wrong” in fact I am the type of person who likes to say “let us add this to the whole story”. When you picture Japan you do not picture: slavery, snake dancers, or even samurai removing their shoes outdoors in a gesture of politeness to a superior, you do not imagine Italian Jesuits, western traders, pirates, and Chinese samurai, but they are all a part of actual samurai life. It is my task to add those lost items to our understanding of Japan and the samurai, but of course, in addition to this, I have to correct the story of the ninja, simply because it is a false one. The shinobi as they should be known were disfigured in the 20th century and I want to reveal their true face.
At the moment Yasuke - the Black Samurai is very prominent in the samurai enthusiast community, and rightly so, he was an African samurai who made his way up the ranks. However, not much is known about his story, so while it is fascinating, there is too little documentation to delve further. This is not the case with William Adams, a Londoner who made his way to Japan, who not only became a samurai but then also became a banner-man (Hatamoto) and leader of a small state. We have so much historical documentation about him and his story is captivating.
