93 Books Like Blood Song

I do not think any list relating to fantasy books would be complete without an entry from David Gemmell, a true gold standard of the genre. Legend is another book I first fell in love with as a teenager. I loved the simple enough premise: countless enemies at the gates of a fortress, and if the fortress falls, the Drenai Empire falls.

The story also introduces what I believe to be one of the most iconic heroes in heroic fantasy, the Deathwalker—Druss The Legend. While there were battles like nothing I had ever read before it was the interaction between the characters and the fellowship of the embattled defenders which brought me into this world fully as I read. I can’t remember if I read WOT or GOT first… but this book was one of my entries into epic fantasy.

It begins with normal people trying to figure out something they can’t fully understand, and fearing being powerless in the face of what’s coming. Jordon really takes his time to slowly build the world, but even then, it feels like it is already established, and it is the reader who is new here.

What made it memorable was the way it balanced massive stakes with human fragility. It explores the theme that power isn’t always just a gift or a curse; it can be a burden that costs the wielders and those who are in orbit of it.

When I learned that this novel and the epic series that followed were, in fact, a chronicle of the tabletop role-playing adventures by the authors and their friends, it became my introduction to the massive world of Dungeons & Dragons.

That such creativity and imagination could be sparked by playing a game was a life-altering event that propelled me not only to play it but would eventually inspire me to write my own book series.

A classic tale of heroism and adventure, the original Dragonlance Chronicles perfectly blends all the best qualities of high fantasy, including some well-timed moments of humor that had me genuinely laughing out loud.

I’ve picked this book purely because I loved the way it brings in Native American culture into the forefront, and I also loved how it marries the modern world with the supernatural seamlessly as well as its gripping story. Reading it taught me a lot about Algonquian culture and the characters in its mythology, as well as how uncommon sources of inspiration can still provide a gripping storyline.

I recommend this book not only for its gripping storyline but for its fascinating take on Irish mythology and seamless blend into our world too! I loved the characters, especially Cedar, the main protagonist in the book as she's thrown into the deep end and has to adapt pretty quickly to survive and save her daughter! And if you're like me and like to work out how it ends, there's enough here to keep you guessing. I certainly didn't see that coming!

I loved this book! Telling the story of a storyteller's life before eventually revealing his true identity, this novel is based during the end of Roman occupation in England and tells a new version of how Merlin came to be. Since the dark ages have always been of interest to me, thanks to numerous visits to living museums depicting the era and growing up with the mysteries of the era thanks to so much being lost in record from that era, exploring the what could have or just exploring the era through a book is just fascinating for me.

Although magic doesn’t feature as strongly in this as the other recommendations and in the subsequent books in the series, I recommend this it cleverly disguises magic within the world, it's not showy but still believable, something which makes you think. It's also a gripping tale that connects Atlantis with the stories around King Arthur.

This is the opening book of the Elenium series and is an excellent example of the heroic quest-type tale. The cynical but lovable Pandion Knight, Sparhawk and his fellow companions must venture to find a cure for a mysterious illness that is besetting their queen.

The mixture of personalities of the companions in the questing group and how they play off one another is what I felt made this book such an excellent read. The world-building is strongly written and realistic for the characters to traverse, and the pacing of the story never lets the reader forget about the ticking clock counting down the seconds of life remaining to the queen, making the stakes of the character's actions all the higher.

I’ve loved the Gears of War games from the first and have been fascinated by what I consider their unusual take on zombies: the glowing, mutating Lambent. When I discovered there was an accompanying book series, I was ecstatic. I did not expect to find myself in such well-crafted, compelling stories that I’d fall even more in love with the world and its main characters.

The teamwork and brotherhood of Marcus, Dom, and the rest have always been the heart of Gears for me. I love knowing that they'll always stand together no matter what is thrown at them (and wow, is there a lot!). The world is a fascinating blend of the familiar and the fantastical, and the combat sequences are *chef’s kiss* I do love me some explosions. Grossman has a way with words. There are not many people who master Hebrew as he does. His ability to express ideas, thoughts, sentiments, characters, the inner human streams that run in our hearts and minds is admirable. Grossman takes you by the hand, slowly makes you immerse in the story, your soul intertwined with the pictures he paints, you become part of all that is happening to the heroes, all the twists and turns, the emotions, the turmoil, the storms, the fears, the hopes, the love. This book is about the love for the land of Israel and about the love of a mother to her child. There are similarities and differences between the two that Grossman delicately deciphers. I have never read such a characterization of a relationship between parents and children. It is deep. It is penetrating. It is true. It sweeps you off your feet.
