This Dungeons & Dragons-inspired fantasy adventure is the first installment in the beloved Dragonlance Chronicles, set in the magical world of Krynn
Once merely creatures of legend, the dragons have returned to Krynn. But with their arrival comes the departure of the old gods—and all healing magic. As war threatens…
Why read it?
11 authors picked Dragons of Autumn Twilight as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
When I learned that this novel and the epic series that followed were, in fact, a chronicle of the tabletop role-playing adventures by the authors and their friends, it became my introduction to the massive world of Dungeons & Dragons.
That such creativity and imagination could be sparked by playing a game was a life-altering event that propelled me not only to play it but would eventually inspire me to write my own book series.
A classic tale of heroism and adventure, the original Dragonlance Chronicles perfectly blends all the best qualities of high fantasy, including some well-timed moments of…
From Rafael's list on taking you on an epic adventure with unlikely heroes.
I loved Dragons of Autumn Twilight because I felt swept up into a world of danger, friendship, and mystery right from the start.
I found myself drawn to the companions, each so different yet bound together by trust and necessity. I loved how I could see pieces of myself in them—Raistlin’s doubts, Tanis’s struggle to lead, and Tasslehoff’s curiosity. I felt the weight of their journey and the thrill of discovering ancient secrets and terrifying dragons.
I cared about their victories and losses as if I were part of the group, and I loved how the story made me believe…
I remember first seeing this book in my Scholastic Book Fair books back in elementary school. Right from the get-go, I was hooked! It was your basic D&D adventuring party. It wasn’t until much later that I found out that it was a module for the game.
When I began reading the story I enjoyed seeing the interplay between the characters, especially the contrast of the twins, Caramon and Raistlin. When I first read this book, I remember thinking how cool it was that Pegasus was talked about outside of mythology. I think the book helped me understand that in…

What captivates me about this series is its embrace of classic fantasy tropes. It encompasses every archetype: quests, battles, betrayal, and the eternal conflict between good and evil. Most compellingly, you forge a deep connection with the characters—you share their laughter and tears and are reluctant to see their journey end.
The series excels in character development, turning the characters into beloved heroes and companions. The thrilling and fast-paced adventures ensure there's never a dull moment. I recommend this series to fantasy fans of all ages. Its accessible narrative style also makes it an ideal entry point for newcomers to…
From Kaeleb's list on epic fantasy you will get lost in.
While the authors did not create the world in which their story took place, it would be true to say they were the ones who brought it to life. As the first fantasy book I read as a child, it will always have a very special place in my heart for introducing me to the world of Krynn and the epic battles between the forces of Paladine the Platinum Dragon and Takisis the Dragon Queen.
With the dragon armies ravaging the land, I was enthralled with the small group of adventurers with amazing characters, such as their leader, Tanis Half-Elven,…

I read this as a child and picked it back for a re-read. I think I loved it even more as an adult.
I fell in love with the characters and remember crying as a teenager through one of the scenes (I won’t give it away). There are wonderful monsters, epic creatures, dragons, and an adventure that changed and influenced my life.
The characters have a history but were separated for years until the rumors of war approached. This brought them together, and none of them were prepared for what was to come, including me. So good.

Once I began my reading journey in high school, I naturally gravitated to this book series.
It was recommended by a friend I played Dungeons and Dragons with from school. This was the mid to late 80s and Dungeons and Dragons was a bit controversial, but we knew it was harmless fun. My friend knew I loved magic, and he told me of Raistlin the magic user and his twin brother Caramon and how they were central to the plot. I was hooked.
This was another fantasy series I just couldn’t put down. I remember getting my younger brother hooked…

And here is the book I wish I did read when I was 13. No single book series has affected me more. When I read Dragons of Autumn Twilight, it changed me from a casual reader to a voracious one. At the time I didn’t know it was a distillation (and more exciting one for my money) of the Lord of the Rings series when I first opened it up, and honestly, I couldn’t care less. I remember seeing the cover. These three people staring out at the reader, not with excitement, but with a look of, “Be careful if…

What a classic! I have read the trilogy several times, and many other books in the Dragon Lance series. The story feels like a roleplaying quest right from the beginning, but it is very accessible for those that are unfamiliar with the concept. The traditional good vs. evil (or colored vs metallic) dragons sets the tone throughout the novel. However, in this story the leaders of the dragons, Tiamat and Bahamut, play vital roles in setting the stage for what is driving each of the dragon armies.

This was my first connection with the world of Dungeons & Dragons (other than the unfinished animation) and I adored everything about it. Of course I had no idea what D&D was until I went to University, but that didn’t stop me from jumping into TTRPG when I was invited into a group!
The story has the classic D&D questline and some wonderful characters that you can totally fall in love with (ahem… Tanis) and I spent a long time as a teen wishing that I could be Goldmoon.
It was also an inspiration when I started writing my own…
