I am always excited to encounter stories which blend the literary and the speculative, which are off-kilter without feeling gimmicky, which end up imparting on me the sense I have encountered something mysterious and resonant and fine. These sometimes bittersweet, sometimes hopeful short stories mingle quiet humour and longing with enough adventurousness to always feel fresh. This book, like the other two on my list this year, is published by an indie press (7.13 Books), and if you are ready for a luminous example of the uniqueness only a small press can offer, this collection will not disappoint.

These six linked sci-fi stories are finely wrought in every sense: the language, the characters, the plot, the world, you name it. I greatly enjoyed the sense of delivering myself as a reader into the hands of a sophisticated and conscientious storyteller. If you love Ursula Le Guin, you’re in for a treat as Whitcher builds her society through a sociological lens, focusing especially on the oblilgations and responsibilities the characters have to one another. These are beautiful stories which do not lean away from darkness; their strong ethical core and poetic execution make this collection a standout.

I haven’t read a better book in a long time than YZ Chin’s collection of linked stories.
At the centre of a panoply of characters and ways of thinking, we find Isabella Sin, a woman who might be taken as a personification of Malaysia, a troubled young nation searching for an identity as it struggles against its own history.

More than any other book here, Cathy Ulrich’s flash fiction collection epitomises the “linked story” concept in terms of form and theme (as opposed to plot).
Each short piece is addressed to “you”, and “you” are a woman who has been murdered. We may learn little or nothing concrete about the dead character each story addresses, but the absence of that stolen life leaves an outline of what’s been lost, a haunting negative image of the life she might otherwise have lived.
What results is a moving, subtle illustration of the humanity of the absent “you”.

As an immigrant to Malaysia, I can attest that the delightful stories in this collection are electric with Malaysian spirit.
The magic in these tales is literally magic, sometimes whimsical, sometimes discomfiting, imbued with warm and ironic wit. The throughline linking the stories is that they focus either on experiences of the uncanny in Malaysia, or the uncanny experiences of Malaysians abroad.
The included story “If At First You Don’t Succeed, Try, Try Again” won a Hugo award, but my personal favourite may be “The Terra-cotta Bride.”
