100 Books Like Art/Work

I first read this book as an angsty artist in college. It was as if the Universe sent me a gift that I needed precisely when I needed it. Rilke–an older/wiser poet, wrote the 10 letters in the book to a young Franz Kappus–a budding/insecure poet. All artists suffer from insecurity, and Kappus wants to know if his poems are good and what he should do.

We all want to do Important and Good work (with capital I’s and G’s). Rilke gently and masterfully steers Kappus to understand that true art is a process and involves every aspect of an artist’s life, that it is often a lonely endeavor but worth it for so many reasons. I felt as if Rilke was speaking to me–as a loving grandfather–with words of encouragement, but also in truth. Bell Hooks is a force! I was introduced to her work through women’s studies classes and loved how she saw the world and presented cultural critiques. This book really helped me look outside the lens of male Eurocentric art history. A series of essays, each one covering an artist, topic, or theory.

It’s been a while since I’ve reread any of them, but I remember that this is the book that helped me dive deeper into Carrie Mae Weems's photography–which I admire greatly. It had me contemplating the point of surrounding ourselves with beauty–and how people who have been told to abandon cultural objects of beauty can seek to find objects that truly heal and sustain our lives.

I didn’t love this entire book from cover to cover, but what I did love, I loved deeply. It contemplates what indeed makes an artist an artist, ruminating on a variety of art makers–from Bonnard to Yoko Ono to Bob Ross to Eve Hesse and Sol LeWitt.

LeWitt’s letter to Eve is something that is seared into my brain. There’s profanity in it, so I won’t repeat any of it here, but it struck me to my core; my whole body agreed with his sentiment. Kimmelman is a skilled writer (duh, he was a New York Times art critic), and he manages to tell intimate stories of how things came to be, why we look at things the way we do, why we collect or want things–including lightbulbs.

I love this book. It taught me where colors come from. I had always heard that, at one point, Ultramarine was the most expensive pigment. Reading this taught me why, as well as why other pigments were/are so expensive.

The fact that Indian Yellow may or may not come from the urine of cows that are fed only mango leaves (in the country of India) was also discussed in the book. Finlay did her homework–traveling around the world–and then magically wove all the knowledge into truly interesting stories. I share tidbits and stories from this book constantly–do you know you are drinking bugs if you drink Campari? Well, you are. You certainly are. 

When I first saw this book, I couldn’t believe that it hadn’t been written already, decades before it actually came out. Minda Harts understands from her own experience that even the best advice for women often misses what women of color need the most to succeed.

I loved the straight talk and the practical advice; there are truths in this book that we all need to hear and guidance that we can all benefit from. 

Definitely dated, UK-centric, and undeniably highly opinionated, this is nonetheless essential. It is a fascinating read, a historical document of the height of the 90s dance scene, and it's both honest and humorous to boot. If you want a pile of hints and tips about how to DJ well while at the same time finding yourself falling in love with how special dance music can be and what it can mean to those who dedicate their lives to it, add this one to your list.

Not one to leave lying around, though, as it is pretty honest about the underbelly of the dance scene in places—as is another book we're getting to later in this list.

Peter Medawar was one of the most influential figures in immunology; I was (and continue to be) inspired by his thinking about how to do research.

His book speaks to me about how I can do my best science and better understand the immune system in order to protect people against infectious diseases in the future.

I love this book for two main reasons. One, it is written clearly with the new horizon for careers in mind, where the workplace has changed and will continue to change. Two, so many of the topics in it resonate with me, like career ownership, strategies, mindset, and more.

It's written in a very energizing and practical manner and is full of great exercises to help professionals discover their path and thrive. Their genuine passion for helping readers jumps out on every page and aligns with my own mission of empowering individuals to thrive in their careers.

I would love to sit down with authors and exchange valuable strategies for unlocking potential and achieving dreams. This book isn't just about career growth; it's about reclaiming control over your professional destiny. If you're ready to unleash your career's full potential, this is the book for you.

I went into reading this book thinking, “not me!” Ha! This book opened my eyes to ingrained behaviors that, at some point in my life, worked to my advantage. While there were definitely habits that I haven’t fallen prey to, a few hit very close to home.

I venture to guess that every woman reading this book will relate to a few of the twelve habits that hold women back. Even if there is only one habit in the entire book that resonates, making a shift away from that behavior will elevate your impact as a leader. Admittedly, I still catch myself–it takes practice.

The editor (Max Brookman), who is also a prestigious book agent, compiles a collection of essays addressing sensitive questions about the future: climate change, human technological enhancement, or human extinction. The authors of the essays are all “rock stars” in different scientific fields, from theoretical physicist and philosopher Sean Carroll to paleoanthropologist Katerina Harvati.

Continuing with my love for hard science fiction and the future of human evolution, I found the ideas presented in this book entertaining and thought-provoking while being educating.
