Dionne Mejer Author Of The Stepped Approach: Onboard Better, Systemize Smarter, and Bring Out the Best in Your Sales Team

From my list on learning how to sell with soul.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’m passionate about Sales with Soul because being sold to is awful. I’m passionate about leaders, by title, actually leading and it bugs me when the balance between getting work done and caring for the human is out of balance. There’s an elegant way to do both, and as someone who struggles with that concept, I have embraced my struggle and put frameworks and systems around the concept and teach it. We host clients, colleagues, and peers on our Rev Shots show to bring our content and discussions to life and share with our audience. I hope you enjoy the books and content as much as I have!

Book cover of Overwatch

Zander Hatch Author Of Rose Island

From my list on military thrillers written by military veterans.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve always wanted to create stories since I was young, inspired by Clive Cussler, Matthew Reilly, and the action movies of the 80’s and 90’s. After serving for 10 years in the Marine Corps infantry, I decided to combine my passion for storytelling with my military experience. Having deployed five times overseas and serving two years as an infantry instructor, I aim to inject a sense of military realism into fast-paced and action-packed stories. I don’t know it all and I’m always looking for veterans who have written military thrillers to get a different perspective on how the military works elsewhere.

Zander's book list on military thrillers written by military veterans

Zander Hatch Why Zander loves this book

What I loved about this book was that it blended real-world past experiences into a thrilling fiction narrative. Written by a Marine Iraqi War veteran, he does not shy away from the psychological horrors of combat and addresses how one would deal with those issues head-on.

The main character is written as fragile and sometimes broken by what he’s witnessed in the past. I loved how the book breaks the mold of the stereotypical hero, bringing a new sense of realism to the story.

Zander's book list on military thrillers written by military veterans

Zander Hatch Why Zander loves this book

I’ve always been an admirer of US military history and how fast the technology advances. A concern that became more apparent during my time of service was the threat of being electronically compromised, jammed, or hacked. This book scratched that itch of wondering what would happen if the US military’s most advanced fighter jet were used against us.

The author was a former US Naval Aviator and a TOPGUN graduate, so when the main character is piloting a F-35 fighter jet, I know what I’m reading is close to the truth. I just loved the level of detail that goes into how fighter pilots fly, talk, and shoot.

Zander's book list on military thrillers written by military veterans

Zander Hatch Why Zander loves this book

I loved the characters in this book; they were just plain cool. Former military guys turned clandestine CIA assassins, they bickered constantly with each other under dire circumstances, but always had each other’s backs. It reminded me of the camaraderie during my time in the military.

Written by a former Green Beret, he brings a level of special operations infused with the shadowy world of the CIA into a thrilling story. I found it fascinating how something like that would operate in the real world, maybe it does? The level of detail in the room-clearing tactics, HALO jumping, and air strikes made the book feel real.

Zander's book list on military thrillers written by military veterans

Zander Hatch Why Zander loves this book

Submarines are a huge fascination of mine, and this book had plenty of them. What really grabbed my interest in this book were the US Navy submarines that carried nuclear missiles and the procedures that went into launching them. Governments can order the launch of nuclear missiles, but it’s the crew that has to agree to execute those orders. The moral weight of implementing weapons capable of mass destruction is a terrifying thought, which is apparent in the book.

Written by a former US Naval Submariner, I learned so much about how submarines work and operate. At one point during his career, the author was one of two people whose permission was required to launch a nuclear missile. Crazy!

After receiving that launch order, it is cut off from all counter-orders and disappears into the Pacific while it makes the eight-day transit to the launch site. What the Kentucky's crew doesn't know is that those launch orders haven't actually come from the U.S. government. Rogue elements within the Mossad have learned that Iran has developed its first nuclear…

Book cover of How We Show Up: Reclaiming Family, Friendship, and Community

Trista Harris Author Of Future Good: How to Use Futurism to Save the World

From my list on dreamers who want to shape the future.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve been obsessed with making the future a better place since I was 8 years old and spent my evenings hanging out in a local community center. I realized that things got better when people who cared showed up for each other. I am now a philanthropic futurist and have spent my career dedicated to helping visionary leaders build a more beautiful and equitable future. All of the books on this list have inspired me, and I hope they inspire you, too. If we all do our small part, we can ensure we have a Star Trek future and not a Hunger Games future.

Trista's book list on dreamers who want to shape the future

Trista Harris Why Trista loves this book

This book was a powerful reminder of the importance of community and connection in our lives. This book made me realize how critical it is for us to show up for each other as humans, and it inspired me to be part of a future where we are deeply connected and caring for one another.

Mia teaches us how to rebuild that sense of belonging we’ve lost, guiding us to embrace vulnerability, generosity, and interdependence. Her message is right on time, especially as she challenges the isolation of the "American Dream" and invites us to lean on each other for support.

This book has truly influenced how I want to show up in the world and be a better human.

What is this book about?

From Black Lives Matter to the ongoingWomen's Marches, we have had some powerful moments over the last decade that have galvanized and created new, but brief, feelings of community. Many of us, however, haven't figured out how to spark that feeling on our own, or how to build off or sustain those moments. Many of us are longing for a kind of sugar-borrowing and stoop-sitting closeness we imagine existed in the 50s. Maybe we even grew up in that environment, but we moved away from home for love, work, or adventure and we don't know how to recreate it in…

Trista's book list on dreamers who want to shape the future

Trista Harris Why Trista loves this book

This book was the book that first exposed me to the ideas of futurism, and its impact on my work has been profound. The principles outlined by Daniel Burrus have become critical tools for me in approaching complex challenges. I especially appreciate the concept of "skipping the problem"—it’s a game-changing mindset that has helped me focus on opportunities rather than getting stuck on obstacles.

Burrus' approach to anticipating change and using it to your advantage is both practical and visionary. I found the book systematic and easy to apply to my own work. It has truly shaped how I think about the future, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to innovate and lead in today’s fast-evolving world.

For every business owner, there’s the question of scale. I never wanted my company to be big. Our purpose is to make the world a better place and we can’t do that if we’re spread too thin; we’d lose our personal touch.

This book gave me ideas to use and wording to use to stay small and excellent in our craft; which was a huge salve to my heart.

This book helped me articulate the different ways children (I’m a Mom, so that’s important to me) learn, which directly translates to Adult Learning Theory. This book helps me fulfill my professional purpose of making the world a better place, one team at a time, and my personal purpose of raising my kids to be the best versions of themselves.

I love this book because it really speaks to the new world order of working.

It helped me rationalize my need to keep going to be at peace with the fact that I’m a builder/operator and not a maintainer. It helped me feel “normal” in my quest to be an entrepreneur and business owner instead of the “lifer” at a company. (Disclosure: Being a “lifer” isn’t a bad thing; it’s just not for me.)

From lawyer/chefs to surgeon/playwrights and mom/CEOs, today’s most fulfilling lives are the ones filled with slashes. One Person/Multiple Careers is essential reading for anyone who is loathe to answer “What do you do?” with a singular definition. Marci interviewed hundreds of people pursuing multiple careers simultaneously — from a longshoreman/documentary filmmaker to a management consultant/cartoonist — and discovered how slash careers integrate and fully express the multiple passions, talents, and interests that a single career often cannot accommodate. The book is a blueprint for building a life filled with slashes and custom-blending a career.
