Cymbeline Barnes is one of the most unconventional female characters I’ve had the pleasure of reading. Not only was she a veterinarian in the early 1920s, but she also had the aspiration to become a world-champion ski jumper during the Gilded Age. Talk about gumption! I fell in love with her character immediately and rooted for her as she fought against preconceived notions of her family and peers. Her sweet, slow-to-develop romance also drew me into the story. Like myself, she struggled with the right balance between a career and family, at a time before that became a normal struggle for women. I loved how the balance played out, making this another of my favorite stories.

Even though authors frequently write about women doctors during the Gilded Age, Dr. Josephine (Jo) is one of my favorites. She is one of the few who had the full support of her father and was his favorite child, more so than her younger brother. What made this story so memorable for me was the lifelike way the author portrayed Dr. Jo and her struggle to be accepted in a man’s profession. The author paired her up with a traditional cavalryman, which added just the right amount of tension to their attraction. I loved everything about this story, from the rich characters to the action to the faith woven throughout. One of my top five favorites of all time.

Georgie Gail is one of the most colorful characters I’ve ever read. There is nothing conventional about her personality, profession, or her bird-watching hobby. The author made me feel like Georgie was an old, dear friend very early in the story. I felt her pain over failed relationships and loved her gumption as she tried to provide for herself. The way the author brought a mix of romance and action, while pairing up two opposite main characters with plenty of comedic dialogue, made the story come alive for me. It was one of the most entertaining novels I’ve read in a long time.

What I loved about this book was the strong female main character, Eunice Holbrook. She held the unusual job of owning an Inquiry Agency (private detective). What drew me to her character was her powerful personality. From her expert marksmanship with a pistol to her analytical reasoning, she embodied everything unconventional. I instantly connected with her and her plight, so much so that I couldn’t put the book down.

The layers of intrigue, combined with the sweet romance of a couple reunited, warmed my heart and made me smile. The author kept me guessing in this murder mystery historical romance. I especially enjoyed the witty banter between Eunice and Arthur.

I always enjoy fish-out-of-water stories, and this book is one of my favorites. Suffragette and outspoken Kathryn are banished from Boston to a wild California gold town. Did she learn her lesson and hold her tongue? Absolutely not! This and the fact that she’s determined to change the town puts her at odds with her new community.

Not only did I love the main characters, Kathryn and Matthias, but I also enjoyed the secondary characters. They each had distinct and, in some cases, quirky personalities, which added depth to the story and made me smile. The story deals with serious themes, but the humor, charm, and delightful romance kept me anxiously turning the pages to find out how it all turned out.

I found this book to be incredibly enjoyable. I was captivated by Edythe’s experience as she tackles her first teaching job, which is set in a one-room schoolhouse in Nebraska. Initially, the town folks were delighted, as she replaced a teacher they deemed ruthless. However, their delight soon turned to dismay at Edythe’s teaching style, which made me laugh out loud. Not only did she shock the town by having her students catch bugs, but she also took them on an outrageous field trip to a women’s suffrage rally. Oh, my!

I loved the hero. As a widower, he believed that having a female teacher would provide just the kind of influence his two boys needed. However, with the town up in arms—along with his own uncertainties— he is unsure how much longer he can support her unconventional ways. This caused romantic conflict that kept me turning pages, eager to… show more.

I have a particular fondness for stories involving mail-order brides, and this one stood out for me due to its unique twist. A well-intentioned neighbor takes it upon himself to order a mail-order bride for the protagonist without his knowledge. To complicate matters further, Evelyn arrives in town completely unaware that the hero has not been informed of her arrival or her reason for coming. Despite this rocky start, they enter into a marriage of convenience.

I found their humorous exchanges delightful as they navigated their emotional challenges while trying to make their marriage work. However, what truly captivated me was how friends and family play pivotal roles in guiding the couple onto their path toward love.

I loved how this wholesome romance novel effectively captured the essence of frontier life through its relatable characters and their interactions within a close-knit community. I especially liked the heroine, Hannah, who stands out due to her occupation as a tailor, which was quite unusual for women during that era. Initially, the hero misjudges Hannah, perceiving her as someone who prioritizes fashion over more serious matters.

This created much of the romantic tension that kept me turning pages. I really enjoyed the humor of Hannah’s attempts to assist the hero’s sister in finding a beau. This subplot not only provided me with laughter but also impressed me with how it enriched character relationships and showcased Hannah’s resourcefulness. 

I have always held a deep appreciation for Mary’s novels, but this particular one struck a chord with me on a deeper level. The narrative is rich with adventure and suspense, making it an exhilarating read. Trace emerges as one of my favorite protagonists; I admire his ability to navigate the complex themes of responsibility and love in his role as a protector, even though he’s overwhelmed with the task he’s taken on. I also liked the heroine.

Though she was initially portrayed as a damsel in distress, she showed remarkable strength, which I found particularly engaging. The story has unique characters and a community that emphasizes shared values. I also appreciated the subtle humor that is interwoven throughout the story.

I liked this story so much that I read it a second time. Author Mary Connealy took me to the Nebraska Sandhills and showed me the beauty of the country while painting the beauty of the woman who lived there. Such a sweet love story of a mother who gives all she has for her sons—and the man who surprisingly gives back to her something she never dreamed she'd have again.
