Why read it?

7 authors picked The Husbands as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I thoroughly enjoyed this fun, thought-provoking romp with a truly original premise: what happens when a woman returns home one day to a husband of 35 years that she's never met before? If that twist doesn't grab you, how about when that guy goes into the attic, a different husband descends? Once the narrator realizes what's going on, she can (sort of) control how long each man sticks around, which is where the story really gets interesting. Because with each husband, Laura finds herself in a whole new version of her own life. And it begs the question, When do…

This book had an incredible premise, and I was afraid the whole time (even as I enjoyed each chapter) that it would be really hard to stick the landing. But the ending was quite satisfying; the author nailed it.

I love stories about the roads we don't take, and this one was original in its premise. The short chapters made it easy to pick up and put down (a must when things are busy), but I felt invested. A joy to read.

Why are the best books written by authors with a gaming history and why did I let my Mum tear me away from the consul back in the 90s! Like Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow, this story of finding endless husbands emerging from your attic, one at a time. like a bottomless husband buffet, uses a gamer's sensibilities to construct a funny, believable yet fantastical story of love and friendship.

I [heart] weird plots.

In this delightful magical realism tale, Lauren, an unmarried woman, is dumbfounded when her attic starts churning out men claiming to be her husband—and the photos on her phone support their claims. Lauren quickly learns that she can get rid of any husband who doesn’t measure up by simply sending him back to the attic, where he will promptly be replaced by a new hubby.

This quirky story had me laughing out loud, but it also made me think about relationships. Should you settle for a romantic partner who meets most of your criteria? Or do…

How's this for a premise: A woman discovers she has a magic attic. Each time she sends her husband in to retrieve something, a different husband comes out. She can swap out at will as much as she likes  and/or risk accidentally losing a good one if he happens to venture into the attic on his own.

New twists get added to the core idea as the story progresses, helping the lead character learn about herself as she gets to try out various lives along the way. It's not exactly time travel or alternate dimensions, but along a similar…

Book cover of December on 5C4

December on 5C4 by Adam Strassberg,

Magical realism meets the magic of Christmas in this mix of Jewish, New Testament, and Santa stories–all reenacted in an urban psychiatric hospital!

On locked ward 5C4, Josh, a patient with many similarities to Jesus, is hospitalized concurrently with Nick, a patient with many similarities to Santa. The two argue…

This book is the funniest of the lot here, and it’s got a great hook: Lauren comes home and finds a guy who says he’s her husband, but she’s not married! And then he goes up to the attic…and another man takes his place, and Lauren’s world is also slightly altered.

This happens over and over again, often to comedic effect. Her journey towards finding the right guy ultimately makes this book special.
