Why read it?

4 authors picked The Hummingbird's Daughter as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

Several Luis Alberto Urrea novels feature powerful women, but this one resonates with me the most. One reason is that, like my novel, his also reimagines the history of a real-life great-aunt from Mexico. Urrea’s protagonist, Teresita, Saint of Cabora, is so full of heart that she gives me hope more readers will embrace Latinas in American literature.

Teresita Urrea exemplifies the strength teenage girls can wield when people encourage them to speak up instead of pipe down and when people value all their gifts regardless of whether those gifts were once labeled “masculine,” like boldness, or “feminine,” like empathy.…

From Cara's list on history featuring powerful women.

From the first words, I felt myself to be in the company of an excellent storyteller. I also love great styles, and Urrea’s was bursting. Though I was unfamiliar with the author, his style and voice are authentic and rich. The characters are oddball and interesting without being forced. Also, for me, there is something about the Mexican culture that is wild. I am a wild child, and thus, I am drawn to the unexpected.

The heroine, Teresita, happens to be an ancestor of the author, and this tale is based on a true story, impeccably researched, so I thought…

I devoured this book when it first came out in 2006, indulging in every delectable morsel of its language, culture, and history. I remember racing to finish the last hundred pages before my children (now grown) hopped off the school bus.

There are scenes from this novel that remain as fresh in my mind today as when I first read them. Urrea creates an immersive, lush, and lyrical setting for this story based on the life of his real great-aunt, Teresita, who had healing powers and was acclaimed as a saint.

I love reading historical fiction that transports me to…

The Hummingbird’s Daughter is the first in a two-part book series about a real-life woman known as Teresita, a curandera (or Mexican folk healer) and revolutionary figure who was born in Mexico and lived in the U.S. for some time. Urrea, a descendant of Teresita, fictionalizes her life in the book. I hope readers fall in love with Teresita’s story and share it with others because she is one of many figures in North American history that we should all know.

The magical realism in this novel makes an appearance through Teresita’s healing powers as a curandera. I’ve been obsessed…
