Why read it?

3 authors picked The Heart Principle as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I loved reading about the experience of an autistic character written by an autistic author. Knowing that this was based on the author's own experience made the story more authentic and easier to understand. Her journey toward self-awareness and self-confidence was inspirational and emotional. A great story about the importance of self-care and putting your needs first.

Hoang’s writing throws light on autism. Violinist Anna is an internet sensation who is experiencing burnout. When her serious boyfriend suggests an open relationship before they marry. Anna’s ASD diagnosis and her anger propel her to change her life. In steps Quan, a tattooed motorcyclist, the classic bad boy for a one-night stand. However, Quan is fighting his own demons, a cancer survivor who’s dating again. In Quan, Anna finds a man who understands her uniqueness and blossoms until a family tragedy thrusts Anna into life with no control. Quan and Anna’s relationship takes a back seat. Hoang’s book opens…

From Saz's list on Asian and South Asian cultures.

I think all of Hoang’s books are masterpieces, but this one in particular hit me right in the feels. The heroine, Anna, is faced with many life changes all at once. A new autism diagnosis, a family tragedy, a break-up, and a caregiver role all culminate in extreme autistic burnout. As an autistic woman, I felt incredibly seen in this beautiful book. The story really captures how devastating burnout can be, while also showing the hero, Quan, give Anna the love and care she needs during a hard time. Their story doesn’t fall into the trap of saying love fixes…
