M.R. Carey (also known as Mike Carey) is a legendary comic book writer and author of the superb zombie novel THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS. In this book he takes us on a journey into the Middle Ages, in a beautifully realised and superbly written evocation of a lost time in which - we soon discover, magical things can happen. The plot is brilliant, the prose is note perfect. But most of all, this is an emotional and moving book in which our underdog hero faces terrible challenges and we love him for it. A masterpiece in my view.
