This is a book of crime short stories by Lavie, who usually writes science fiction and fantasy. But he is also a master of noir writing - channelling the best of Raymond Chandler and Walter Mosely in a world of Israeli gangsters and hitmen and hitwomen. Some of the characters in this book recur in Lavie's brilliant and epic novel MAROR, which I also strongly recommend. But there's something pleasing about the tightness, the economy of scale, of this short story collection that I adore.
A middle-aged hitwoman goes on the run from the Israeli mob; a boy on a South Pacific island searches for a missing cat and uncovers dark secrets; an ageing bagman has to recover a package across one violent night, no matter the cost; an informer must uncover the heist of a lifetime on the fringes of the Roman Empire, and Sherlock Holmes is faced with a confounding botanical mystery; while a pair of hapless actors are forced into a seedy mystery in Golden Age Hollywood.

M.R. Carey (also known as Mike Carey) is a legendary comic book writer and author of the superb zombie novel THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS. In this book he takes us on a journey into the Middle Ages, in a beautifully realised and superbly written evocation of a lost time in which - we soon discover, magical things can happen. The plot is brilliant, the prose is note perfect. But most of all, this is an emotional and moving book in which our underdog hero faces terrible challenges and we love him for it. A masterpiece in my view.
'A MASTERPIECE OF MEDIEVAL DARK FICTION' Christopher Buehlman, author of Between Two Fires
From the bestselling M. R. Carey comes an enthrallingly dark medieval tale - a story of twisted folklore, macabre magic and the strangest of found families. This is the tale of Once-Was-Willem.
Reader reviews: 'This book. Is. Phenomenal. Go buy it when it comes out . . . This could EASILY be my favorite book of the year already' 'Perfect in every way. 5/5 stars. Order it now; you do not want to miss this one' 'An amazing tale that I can see myself going back to…
This is among the best of the romantasy novels I've been reading recently; a compelling, extremely well written and at times very dark take on the world of faeries. The opening sequence is utterly superb and once our heroine enters the world of the fey, narrative surprises come thick and fast. I am a big sucker for stories which blend action and adventure with romance and love - that's why I love the Anne McCaffrey DRAGONRIDER books! And this delivers all the simmering lust one could desire, in a story that constantly delights.

THE GREAT WEST WOOD is a magic realist thriller set in the South London suburb of Westwood. A vibrant urban village set upon a hilltop, looking out across London, in an area once covered by an ancient forest.
This is a place where magic is taken for granted; where trees can talk; and children can float; and where a long-dead peat body can be resurrected to become a much-feared crime boss.
