Why read it?

3 authors picked On Writing as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

Stephen King’s memoir, On Writing, is brutally honest, deftly observant, and at times frighteningly visceral.

The skill with which he brings a bad ear appointment or the eating of too many eggs to life is a reminder to me that to be a writer doesn’t mean to live as a celebrity. It means to take the mundane pieces of an ordinary life and invest them with purpose and excitement.

Never been a fan of King’s prose or horror stories. But this is the best book I’ve read on the craft of fiction, period. The first half is a sharp, funny memoir. The second a no-BS manual on how to sit down, shut up, and write. As an aspiring fiction writer, it sometimes hit hard.

I’ve lived in 8 apartments, 3 countries, and 4 cities, and I took my copy of Stephen King’s book with me to every one of those homes. Apart from being a heartfelt, hilarious memoir, King’s book brims with an infectious love and curiosity for writing. King still seems to be fascinated, even mesmerized by the process of writing, and between his lines, I even felt he sees himself more as a vessel than a master.

I’m always deeply moved by all the stops in his personal story (and tear up when he gets the news that he sold Carrie)…
