Why read it?
5 authors picked My Effin' Life as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
As a fairly big fan of the band Rush I thought this was an interesting, entertaining, and emotive read. From the highs (literally) of the band's early years, through to the very sad loss of drummer Neil Peart, this gives a good insight into how the albums were created and why they made certain choices (like using more synthesizers, gah!).
I looked forward to reading the book on my Kindle every night, often listening to Rush music while I did so.
Autobiography is my fave genre. I believe there's something to be gained or learned from every life. Geddy Lee isn't just a rock icon, he's also a Canadian treasure. I can't say I'm a big fan of Rush - except for a few of the more radio-friendly singles they've released - but this memoir is much more than the making of a legendary band. Lee delves deeper into his life, his family's legacy, what it means to be him in this space and time. He drew me in. Simply an excellent read.
I've been a huge Rush fan since I was 15. I have all their albums and I've seen them in concert many times. At first I thought I knew enough about the band, but I'm so glad I bought this book. Geddy Lee takes us through his remarkable life story, including an emotional chapter about his parents' experiences in the Holocaust. Lee shares amusing anecdotes from childhood, early band adventures, and the eventual formation of Rush. The whole book is a backstage pass to one of the world's greatest rock bands. As I mentioned, I bought the book—which is filled…

I'm not usually one to read biographies, but Geddy Lee's My So Called Effin Life was amazing. The stories of his youth, of how his parents survived the Holocaust, and then the history of the band Rush. Simply amazing, and filled with all sorts of great, funny anecdotes. Geddy writes with a casual but intelligent and humorous style that keeps you glued to the pages.
Rock and roll memoirs can be hit or miss. This one was an absolute bullseye! Getty Lee is thoughtful, self-deprecating, witty, and introspective throughout this book. I came away with a renewed appreciation for his artistry and Rush's impact on the music that I love. His opening chapters--a vivid account of his parents' Holocaust experience--are gripping and unsettling (as they should be). If you only read one thing in this book, make it those chapters.
