One of the things that makes me feel great when I’m reading is when I find myself laughing out loud. Christie Tate’s witty memoir, Group, offers that in spades.

Yet this is a story of recovery and of escaping the invisible poisons that plague so many of us who come from what appears on the surface to be a “very nice” life. Mostly, it’s a story about kindness—about a group of people able and willing to acknowledge another person’s very real pain even if its source is not immediately apparent.

Even if this memoir weren’t a “Reece’s pick,” I would have devoured it (pun intended). 

Christie is a successful attorney who’s been binging and purging since the seventh grade. She invites us in as she carefully counts and eats apples every night for dessert (“I spent more on apples than I spent on cable, gas, and transportation combined”).

Christie takes the reader with her into the recovery rooms and gives us a ring-side seat to her journey. I could (and will) read this book again and again and again.
