Why read it?

Every so often, I meet a charming, humane fictional character who seems like someone I would very much like to have a long conversation with. The gentlemanly amateur detective Charles Lenox is just such a man. And, in fact, he does seem to spend an awful lot of time having tea with his friends in this novel, set in 1865 London.

But that doesn’t stop Mr. Lenox from using his impressive wits to solve the murder of a housemaid, who is dead in an apparent suicide. I love this series by author Charles Finch and eagerly await each new installment.

The Victorian era mysteries featuring upper class private detective Lenox are a time-traveller's delight. You are plunged into the details of London in the nineteenth century and you travel with an intelligent and thoughtful young detective and his lovely widowed next door neighbour. The historical detail is fine and delicate, and you are never pulled away from an engaging story by too much historical research. Always just enough to ground you thoroughly in the period and the story.

The tour begins in an elegant London residence, one of my favorite settings for a puzzling murder. What I like in this story of the apparent suicide of a maid is how the careful rendering of scenes made the story’s events more realistic and its characters, especially the gentleman-of-leisure amateur sleuth, more believable.

The author’s deft touch made me feel that I was right there—reading in the library of his West End house, riding in his carriage through clogged London streets, and even being kicked in the stomach in a dark alley. I thoroughly enjoyed this expertly plotted, frequently humorous,…

A Beautiful Blue Death begins the publication order of this marvelous Victorian series, though some later-written prequels bring the list of titles to fifteen.

Lenox is remarkable for his affable nature—no enormous childhood trauma, addictions, or unresolved grief defining him; he’s not oppressed by his society. He stands in contrast to the complicated, dynamic, and politically fraught world he investigates.

Finch’s prose is both plummy and punchy, his voice well crafted for the period, and his plots delightfully rife with Victorian arcana and eccentricities. Comfort reading never had quite this much style, elegance, and verve!
