I’ve never encountered a novel so layered, so overpowering, so filled with trauma. Morrison presents the historical facts of slavery to the reader in quiet language and multiple interpretations of Sethe’s choice, inviting the reader to participate in the moral deliberations of the characters. She purposefully keeps the true facts ambiguous and unfamiliar, intentionally obscures deeds too devastating to describe. In doing so, the reader senses those acts as they were perceived by the slaves themselves. Morrison whispers the evils of slavery to us and our response is speechless. It is heartbreak. It is truth.

I experienced a multitude of emotions in this captivating, sweeping novel that follows a cast of flawed, passionate, confused, and lonely characters over their entire lives, through births, deaths, marriages, secrets, tragedies and even some resolution. Creating a real portrait of an American past, the author inserted wisdom through his well developed characters. As I turned each absorbing page, I couldn’t help feeling like I was reading an old classic. Epic yet intimate, Buckeye tells about war and adultery, the fallibility of human attraction, and the vast journey we must travel to arrive at truth.
One town. Two families. A secret that changes everything.
'Poignant, powerful' Independent 'Omniscient, sweeping, almost defiantly sentimental' New York Times 'It's not just a great Midwestern novel, it's a great novel, period' Financial Times
'I've been yearning for a novel that connects the American generations who dealt with our two Wars - one of Omaha Beach, the other of the Ia Drang Valley. Buckeye is that book, and it soars' TOM HANKS 'Funny and tender ... Patrick Ryan has long been one of my favourite writers' ANN PATCHETT 'I love this…
Beginning with a surprise encounter: Daphne is strolling with her husband Jonathan at the Metropolitan Museum only to run into the stepfather Eddie Triplett she hasn’t seen for forty years but who she shared a deep affection. This is a story of love, loss, memory, family, and kindness. As with several Patchett tales, our view of the present is more deeply considered by shining a luminous light on the past. And we experience intense human connection and all that is good and right, even despite the childhood muddle that came long before.
