Book cover of The Proving Ground: A Lincoln Lawyer Novel

Peter Dixon ❤️ loved this book because...

This is Michael Connelly's latest , in his ongoing set of interconnected 'sagas' that originated with the Hieronymous Bosch detective stories. This one is part of the Lincoln Lawyer series featuring attorney Mickey Haller, so it is best described as a courtroom drama. All the books are of course thrillers, but often touch on a current political or social issue. In this case, the issue could not be more current: it deals with the influence of an artificial intelligence chatbot on a susceptible teenager. No further spoilers - just read it yourself!

What is this book about?

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly, the Lincoln Lawyer is back with a case against an AI company whose product may have been responsible for the murder of a young girl.

Following his “resurrection walk” and need for a new direction, Mickey Haller turns to public interest litigation, filing a civil lawsuit against an artificial intelligence company whose chatbot told a sixteen-year-old boy that it was okay for him to kill his ex-girlfriend for her disloyalty.

Representing the victim's family, Mickey's case explores the mostly unregulated and exploding AI business and the lack of training guardrails. Along…

Book cover of Patriot: A Memoir

Peter Dixon ❤️ loved this book because...

The moving story of Navalny's fate after he had the temerity to challenge the authority and power of the Russian government. I found the book, based mostly on Navalny's prison diaries, both inspiring and shocking. His courage and stoicism jumped from the page to inspire. His exposure of the details of endemic corruption was a shock, even if the basic facts may be well known. And his accounts of what becomes important to a prisoner - the rare taste of an egg or a slice of apple, the uncommon kindness of a warder - give the reader an otherwise unattainable understanding of the difference between our everyday triviality and what is genuinely important. Wonderful!

My 3rd favorite read in 2025

Book cover of Game of Spies

Peter Dixon ❤️ loved this book because...

The late Paddy Ashdown, better known as a Liberal politician in the United Kingdom, wrote several impeccably researched nonfiction books about the Second World War. This one deals with the Special Operations Executive, an area of my own research and writing, and the attempts to catch and imprison its courageous secret agents. As a researcher, I admired the accurate detail, but I also loved also the evocative descriptions of the dangers agents - and the Resistance fighters with whom they worked - faced and the constant tension of their lives. Not a new book, but well worth going back to.

2 authors picked Game of Spies as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Spies, bed-hopping, treachery and executions - this story of espionage in wartime Bordeaux is told for the first time.

Game of Spies uncovers a lethal spy triangle at work during the Second World War. The story centres on three men - on British, one French and one German - and the duels they fought out in an atmosphere of collaboration, betrayal and assassination, in which comrades sold fellow comrades, Allied agents and downed pilots to the Germans, as casually as they would a bottle of wine.

In this thrilling history of how ordinary, untrained people in occupied Europe faced the…

Setting the Med Ablaze

By Peter Dixon ,

Book cover of Setting the Med Ablaze

What is my book about?

It was Christmas 1942. Eleven young women boarded the troopship Strathaird and braved the attentions of U-Boats in the deep Atlantic.
Borrowing a cricketing phrase, they called themselves the First Eleven. But they were not the first to arrive at the Special Operations Executive’s secret North African base near Algiers. Code-named Massingham, it was formed by SOE to spearhead subversion and sabotage in what Winston Churchill called ‘the soft underbelly’ of Europe.
Massingham was hidden away at the Club des Pins, a former luxury resort nestling among pines next to a Mediterranean beach. By the time SOE had got to work, there was little luxury left.
Setting the Med Ablaze tells the true stories of the men and women of Churchill’s secret base. Its life was short. Less than two years after its formation, its job was done. But Massingham played a key role in the Allied offensive in the Mediterranean islands, Italy and France.
If you enjoy historical nonfiction, this book is for you.
