This book was so quiet and thought provoking yet, a edge of your seat page turner. It is a "first contact" book, but not really, it's actually a book about death and how we grieve. This is a book that sat with me even when I wasn't reading it. I would describe it as "haunting" because of how personal the concepts of grief and death are to people. It was anything but predictable. I saw some reviews complaining that there wasn't some sort of huge "realization" or victory moment for the protagonist at the end. I actually really liked that about this book. Not a ll questions get answered. Sometimes there is no victory. Sometimes its a slog, and it just ends. That's real life. I very much enjoyed this book and I hope those out there that are ok with a little melancholy will love it too.

I am a huge fan of memoirs and this one by Demi Moore was just astonishing. One word: transparent. She didn't try and sugar coat of gloss over, you got the unfiltered truth about her experiences in life and you were left with your own interpretation of it. I would listen to the audio book for hours at a time, completely captivated at the stories from her life. Her complicated and conflicted relationship with her mother was the most fascinating thread in this book. You want to hate her mother, but you come to realize (as she did) about how her mother was, like we all are, terribly flawed and doing the best she could. I was moved to tears at the description of the last few days Demi spent with he mother and the mental process of navigating a very complex love and anger toward this person who birthed her into life. It's a highly entertaining read and I just loved this book.

Gosh I loved this book so much! Any parent who is conflicted about having a child who "came out" needs to read this book. It's a semi-memoir, mainly focused on a road trip the writer took with his mother across the country. I am now aware that I put two books on this list that feature very complicated relationships with mothers, so apparently I am drawn to this theme not only as someone with a similar complicated relationship with her mom but also as a therapist. The writers mother does not "approve" of his being gay, and yet on this long trip together they in subtle ways begin to unravel this issue, and the other issues that create rifts between generations. It was a touching story and I found myself in tears many times, in empathy to them both over how HARD loving someone can be!
