Monsters and magic have always had a hook on me, ever since I was just a kid going through a stack of Stephen King paperbacks that I was definitely too young for my brother to have given me – not that many would call his work “fantasy” exactly, despite the amount of vampires ghosts and magic that say otherwise. Urban fantasy, blending those elements with the familiar world we know, is a particular favourite of mine. So much so, that I wrote my own! Granted, the urban area in question is 19th-century Paris, but I say that still counts.
Can you call it “urban fantasy” when most of the action happens in rural areas? You really get a sense of how much young Paxton Locke lost when his mother murdered his father to summon a demon, and how that shapes him in the present into a man who goes out of his way to help others all over the country. Paxton isn’t the only character whose layers we get to dig into either. Without spoiling anything, he does pick up a sidekick in his travels who is more than meets the eye, and the narration occasionally switches to some other colourful characters on their own arcs to intersect Paxton’s.

From a book series that everyone has heard of to a book series even I forgot existed! Seriously, it was difficult to find these books again, but as a teenager, I devoured Mike Carey’s urban fantasy series about freelance exorcist Felix Castor.
They’re so irreverent, so bolshy, and absolutely not what I expected when I was looking for a new fantasy. These books are actually cool! The biggest problem Felix has is paying his rent until, of course, whatever case he’s given upends his life and drags him into worlds of cultish magic, thuggish villains, and difficult decisions.
As a bonus, after digging these up, I have discovered another book has been added to the series, so I’ve cleared my schedule and apologized yet again to my TBR pile.

I'm the perfect age for this book that is steeped in 1980s nostalgia. I listened to much of the same music on my Walkman and even worked in a VHS movie rental store—the cover design of the paperback mimics VHS packaging, including the "Be Kind Please Rewind" sticker. If you were in your teens or early twenties in the '80s you'll love all the references. If you weren't, you're getting a great glimpse into the time. And it's also truly creepy and scary!

I come from a rather strange background: southern Italian and Eastern European Jewish. As a child, I heard both Italian (Neapolitan dialect) and Yiddish. I later learned that my maternal grandmother’s brother was the well-known Yiddish poet and playwright, Jacob Adler, creator of Yente (who wrote under the name B. Kovner to avoid confusion with the great actor by that name). I have been involved with what some call the “occult,” “paranormal,” or “supernatural” for many years, and these appear in much of my recent writing. Moreover, The Ibbur’s Taledraws on various elements drawn from the history of my mother’s family, including the fate of some during the Holocaust.
This study offers a thorough presentation of the traditional (and non-traditional) Jewish thoughts about various topics, including ghosts and apparitions, magic and superstition, and even reincarnation. However, the main thrust is the analysis of six (presumably) documented accounts of possession by spirits and subsequent exorcisms.
I have listed this work for two reasons. First, it underscores the significance of possession within a community not known for performing exorcisms. Then, more personally, I found the presentation challenging, intriguing, and perhaps even provocative. If such malevolent possession has been documented, why not a benevolent ibbur?

I also read mysteries with churchy connections—lots of them. I love to explore the questions I am so often asked when talking about the books I love: why is there such a plethora of them, and why does the Church, which represents ‘goodness,’ appear so often in novels which feature unspeakable crimes?
Set in the evocative, spooky borderlands known as the Marches, between England and Wales, this is part of a series by Phil Rickman. Through the novels we follow the trials and tribulations of Merrily Watkins, a parish priest and the official exorcist for the Hereford diocese of the Church of England—thus introducing a strong element of the supernatural. Merrily is a believable and sympathetic protagonist, with her share of human weaknesses, and she’s surrounded by a rich, unforgettable cast of ongoing supporting characters: daughter Jane, musician Lol, and the wonderful Gomer Parry. It was difficult to choose one book from this fine series, but I settled on this one because it features one of my own favourite churches—Kilpeck, in the wilds of Herefordshire.

The Good Demon is unlike anything else I’ve read. It’s eerie, intimate, and spellbinding. Clare’s demon was her best friend, her Only, right up until her parents called a priest to cast the demon out. Now the only thing Clare wants is to get her demon back. It’s hard to say more about this book other than that it is very, very, good. The horror elements are scary in the way of abandoned houses and shadows seen from the corner of your eye. If you like your stories strange and moody and your characters flawed, you should definitely give this book a try.

As a genre reader since childhood, I’m all-too-familiar with the tropes of the Chosen One, the Prophecy and all those things that lead the unsuspecting child of humble birth to fulfil their Great Destiny. I’ve no complaint against it, it’s been the source of many rich and inventive stories, but I find myself increasingly drawn to stories where the protagonist is an ordinary Joe (or Jo), sucked into uncommon events beyond their normal lives and forced to find a way to survive. It’s easy to grab attention with the threatened destruction of the galaxy. How much more satisfying, then, to make a reader care about the soul of one character.
For me, the perfect blend of format and content. While I am in awe of the way Burgoyne stitches her story together in non-chronological order, no idle conceit but one that serves her story, introducing characters and themes when it makes most sense for the narrative rather than the chronology, it’s the emotional heart that resonates. Her protagonist is a heel, but I found myself rooting for him because of the emotional authenticity of his heartbreak.
I also relished the concept that, having paid the devil (or what stands for the devil in this tale) to remove every memory of the woman that broke his heart, his journey to try and recover those memories isn’t based on their loss, but rather the realisation that if he doesn’t know who she is, any new woman he meets could actually be her, ready to break his heart all over again. I’m a scholar of religion who was trained in the History of Christianity at Rice University, and I’m endlessly fascinated by the monsters that people create, demons being one of the most often invoked and feared. I’ve been particularly interested in how people make use of ideas of demons throughout history, and much of my teaching and research has revolved around this subject. While I began as a medievalist, the contemporary United States is–believe it or not–equally, if not richer, in its materials on demons. More and more, I find myself drawn to researching the demons that pop up in an unlikely area: politics.
McCloud digs into ideas of contemporary exorcisms and deliverance ministries but connects them up with truisms in American religion. The result is a solid argument that these are neither the province of “crazy people” on the fringe of the nation and that this movement is growing in popularity.
I particularly loved the material on “spiritual mapping,” a practice in the Third Wave which locates geographic areas of demonic influence.
