I listened to the audiobook edition of this story and was completely blown away.
The narration is superb, with the reader performing songs and really making the story come alive, but the prose was just wonderful. Seriously, I would hear lines and think, “Oh my God, I wish I could write like that!”
I haven’t read much fantasy that was written in the past 20 years, but I can see why this is regarded as a modern classic. I loved it and wish he would finally complete the trilogy!

This was my introduction to fantasy, and wow, what a story!
Of course, I eventually realised what everyone else had already known, that Sword of Shannara is basically a simplified retelling of The Lord of the Rings, but, as a first fantasy novel for a teenager to read, well, it made a huge impression on me. The second in the series, The Elfstones of Shannara, built on the strong foundation and moved away from LOTR as the author let their own imagination run free.
I liked the characters, particularly the giant druid, Allanon (yes, I have a thing for giant druids as readers of my own novels will know!), and the titular magical weapon, the Elfstones. Exciting stuff that really made my young mind full of possibilities, and having listened to it again more recently as an audiobook, I found it was still a really fun book.

The Dragonlance series is rightly regarded as a classic of fantasy fiction, but I feel the main trilogy doesn’t hold up quite as well these days as the Legends trilogy that begins with Time of the Twins.
This book has slightly more grown-up writing than other books in the series, and I think the two main characters, Raistlin, the sickly mage, and his physically powerful brother, Caramon, are two of the best ever created.
The plot over the trilogy is really exciting and draws the reader in, with some unexpectedly emotional events and lots of character development. I wanted to be Caramon when I was a youngster, and, actually, I still do!

Scotland’s greatest poet since Burns, Hugh MacDiarmid, said that there were no traditions in writing, only precedents. He was thinking that, were traditions followed, adhered to, applauded, and praised, and prized too highly, then the danger of slavish repetition rather than creative divergence was too high. We need the mad moments, when all bets are off and something truly unpredictable will happen. I write with Scots modernist, postmodernist, and experimental precedents in mind. I want there to be Scots literature that reflects a divergent, creative nation, willing to experiment with words and life, and, in Alasdair Gray’s formulation, “work as though in the early days of a better nation.”

She finds her boyfriend, whom she never names but gives him a Godlike uppercase H whenever He is mentioned, dead by his own hand on the floor of their flat and coolly accepts the fact.

I spent my twenties mostly devouring women’s fiction and romance novels with female leads, but I also stepped outside my preferred genre. Being a strong lead doesn’t necessarily mean saving the world or doing something heroic (though obviously that helps!), it’s about strength of character, being real, and being able to fight on when things get difficult. I always dreamt of being an author, but only started writing properly when I developed a debilitating long-term health condition. I’m a writer of historical novels and primary literacy books, and a poet. I was born in Trinidad and live in London. So why am I writing about the magic of castles? I’ve loved visiting them since I was a child, when I’d run round them and imagine what had happened there. Back home, I’d immerse myself in reading legends and fairy stories—at bedtime, lying in my top bunk, I'd make up stories to entertain my sister in her bottom bunk. I’ve spent some time in the north of Scotland and became intrigued by the remains of Pictish forts on hilltops and by the sea. This book doesn’t provide many answers—written records before 900 AD are few and the archaeology is confused—Konstam’s conclusion is "the main benefit of any visit to one of these sites is to be able to stand on the same hilltop or promontory, and to imagine what it might have looked like in the days of the Picts." Which explains why legends and stories have grown up about castles—imagining has been key to making sense of such imposing features in the landscape, when often their real history has been forgotten over time.
Konstam’s book is one of a series, and if your curiosity is about a different sort of castle it’s worth checking it out.

Konstam introduces the reader to the principal types of fort, including the re-use of earlier defences, before offering more in-depth surveys of Dundurn and Dunadd. As well as architecture and construction he looks at the use of the forts in war and peace, to control the landscape and act as royal strong points.
